5 GIs killed in Afghan chopper downing
Source: Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Five U.S. soldiers were killed when their Chinook helicopter was apparently shot down in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, a U.S. military official said. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

SNIP

A purported Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, claimed in a phone call to The Associated Press that militants had shot the helicopter down in Helmand province. That claim could not be immediately verified.

CNN was reporting on this and commenting that Iran is supposedly assisting the Taliban in trying to bloody US forces. Iran and The Taliban are bitter enemies, they said, but are cooperating against US forces in Afghanistan. I don't know how accurate or reasonable the CNN report is about Iran.

1. 7 killed, at least 5 Americans.
Shot down at low altitude. 5 person crew, all US, two other military, coalition or US unknown.

Rescuers have been ambushed. Sounds alot like the one on Tuesday.

4. This is getting scary.
The reports are so close together, and the incidents so tight, that I'm having trouble keeping up.

One day it's "9 US troops killed in Iraq"
Next day, it's "9 US troops killed in Iraq"
I don't know if it's the same headline or a new one.

This is getting really bad.
We're losing badly right now.

5. Update: U.S. Helicopter Shot Down In Afghanistan; Rescue Team Ambushed
http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7007497783

Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) - NATO military officials say a U.S. CH-47 Chinook helicopter was brought down by enemy fire in Afghanistan, killing seven people; five crew and two passengers.

Furthermore, NATO officials say a rescue team sent to the crash site was ambushed; there is no information as to the casualties that team suffered.

The U.S. helicopter was operating in support of the NATO-led mission to fight what is left of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

6. Many reports seem to be accompanied now by "Iran may be involved."
Edited on Wed May-30-07 08:01 PM by Straight Shooter
That sort of greasy phrasing where you can't claim they say that Iran "is" involved, like bush and cheney linking Saddam to September 11. Just keep planting those "Iran may be involved" seeds and watch it sprout into another Little War of Horrors.

That's how they do it, one innuendo at a time, until you get the same situation as we had years ago, when 70 percent of Americans believed Saddam was responsible for September 11.

9. Canadian killed in Afghanistan helicopter crash
A Canadian was among seven NATO soldiers killed after their helicopter was reportedly shot down in southern Afghanistan, military officials confirmed on Thursday.

A British soldier and the aircraft's five-member U.S. crew also died in Wednesday night's crash, a statement from NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

"After the crash, a unit went in to the crash scene and received small arms fire, from an ambush from the enemy," he said. "It was a hostile area where the helicopter went down and initial indications are that enemy fire may have brought down the helicopter."

A battalion of U.S. forces from the 82nd Airborne Division has been engaged in heavy combat in Helmand province in recent weeks, but British soldiers make up the majority of NATO troops in the volatile region.
