Montana delays slaughter of 300 bison amid uproar (time is running out)

ON, Idaho (Reuters) - Public outrage prompted a temporary stay of execution on Wednesday for 300 bison, including an estimated 100 calves, roaming in Montana outside the confines of Yellowstone National Park.

The Montana Board of Livestock on Tuesday announced plans to capture and kill the bison, or buffalo, in the wake of news earlier this month that seven Montana cows had tested positive for brucellosis, a disease that can cause stillbirths in cows and infects some of the Yellowstone bison herd.

Bison advocates, including the Buffalo Field Campaign, launched an opposition campaign that caused an e-mail and telephone backlog at the state and federal agencies that manage Yellowstone's 3,900 bison.

This is the nations last wild herd of purebred bison. This is beyond a disgrace.
I'll post contact information so everyone can send in comments.

1. Link to Buffalo Field Campaign

> > > > HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO:
PLEASE CONTACT these three decision-makers TODAY demanding that they cease plans to capture and slaughter the buffalo who are trying to live wild and free! Contact each by phone, fax, and email and let's not let them forget that the world is watching!

* MONTANA GOVERNOR BRIAN SCHWEITZER: Demand that Schweitzer keep his campaign promise to provide tolerance for bison in Montana.
(406) 444-3111 (phone)
(406) 444-5529 (fax)
governor@mt.gov (email)

* MONTANA ACTING STATE VET JEANNE RANKIN: Urge her to withdraw her decision to slaughter Yellowstone bison calves and family groups. Remind her you are boycotting beef and your friends are joining you!
(406) 444-1895 (phone)
(800) 523-3162 (phone)
(406) 444-1929 (fax)
jrankin@mt.gov (email)

* YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK SUPERINTENDENT SUZANNE LEWIS: Ask her if it's really worth the lives of 300 wild buffalo, including newborn calves, to have Montana ship them to slaughter rather than deeper into the Park.
(307) 344-2002 (phone)
(307) 344-2005 (fax)
suzanne_lewis@nps.gov OR yell_superintendent@nps.gov (email)

It's crucial that we flood these offices today! Capture could begin as soon as Thursday, with transport to slaughter beginning Friday. Read BFC's press release from Tuesday at:

2. That's an interesting reason to kill of that many Bison
They might have mis-carriages.

If that's the case, wouldn't it be better to keep them alive and hopefully study what is causing the miscarriages

9. They know what causes it... Brucellosis
the fear is that they will infect domesticated cattle.

3. I just sent Schewitzer an email
I think the real reason is to free up our PUBLIC LANDS so that ranchers can run more cattle; the Bison are innoculated for brucellosis, I think it's bullshit that they are blaming the Bison for this.

It all comes down to the same goddamn thing; screw the public and let private enterprise take over. It just makes me sick.

In addition to disowning both our Senators last week, now I have to contend with a Governor.

4. Yup. You're right on all of that.

I encourage everyone here to stand up for the Buffalo. This is an injustice
that can't be tolerated. Let's not turn a blind eye. Please contact the agencies
posted above. Let's not allow our precious bison to be exterminated.

a man of conscience....good luck. I'm going to write to him too. My son wrote several blistering letters yesterday. He loves Yellowstone, as do I, and worked there for Xantera in 2005. He used to call me some from the park and tell me about the "buffalo jams" on the roads! I saw one when I was last there in 2000......a park ranger was very perturbed by the cars stopping! Wanted us to push our way through! I was the first car in line so this isn't heresay.....everybody seemed to be having a good time watching the buffalo and snapping pictures. The parks have been privatized enough, hence Xantera et. al. and I think it's time for the citizens to get a voice about our parks, our buffalos etc.

and Jeanne Rankin (I think...I cannot read my own writing) at 800-523-3162 and Suzanne Lewis at 307-344-2002. I was furious and let them know it in no uncertain terms.

or buy cow leather.

Cattle ranching is one of the most environmentally destructive practices on the planet.

21. They probably needed the meat for the pet food industry.
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 08:49 AM by peacebuzzard
:sarcasm:

during the pet food recall while researching what I would alternatively feed my pets, I was shocked at one of the premier pet foods listing bison as its primary ingredient.

Bison!!!! In Solid Gold, no less.....sold in all your fine health food stores nationwide.

It is the no. 1 ingredient in a designer natural dry food for your cute little dog called "Wee Bit" (That is the name of the Solid Gold line....) CAN YOU IMAGINE feeding this majestic, historical enigma of this country to your little foo foo pet after his grooming day at the salon????

I have a little guy, but the only "meats" he gets in his kibble are from a natural fare smaller than him: chicken or fish.

22. Bison is a terrific and healthy meat.
It's lower in fat than chicken and many fish, all while it has more protein than beef.
