Iraqi police chief is arrested

BAGHDAD (AP) - An Iraqi police chief praised by US forces for clearing his city of insurgents has been arrested.

The US military says the arrest of the Sunni official follows an investigation into alleged murder, corruption and crimes against the Iraqi people.

According to a statement from Multinational Corps-Iraq, the police chief (Colonel Hamid Ibrahim al-Jazaa), his brother and 14 bodyguards were taken into custody in the city of Hit (heet), 85 miles west of Baghdad. The statement says all of the accused are currently being held by coalition forces.

The chief (Al-Jazaa) was lauded by the US military for leading "Operation Police Victory," a crackdown on insurgents in the Sunni Arab city in February.
