Bill would give voters say on war (CA Presidential Primary)

A key Senate committee approved a bill Wednesday to place an advisory measure on California's February 2008 presidential primary ballot asking voters whether the United States should leave Iraq.

Opponents said such a measure would complicate foreign policy, embolden America's enemies and demoralize U.S. troops.

Supporters said having such a vote would give Californians a chance to register their position on the war, which polls show a majority of Californians oppose.

"The largest state in the nation will be on record," said the bill's author state Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, testifying before the five-member Rules Committee. "Will it mean anything? The answer is, who knows?"

Wish every state would do this! Hey, make it national!

1. I will actively campaign for this measure if it goes on the ballot!
Very important, and could shape the whole election nationally! We should collect signatures because Schwarzenegger will never sign Perata's bill.

2. I can't believe some of the "rationale"
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 02:43 AM by beltanefauve
the opponents to this are stating! (No, unfortunately, I can :eyes:)

"Sen. Roy Ashburn of Bakersfield, the Republican vice-chair of the committee, said such a ballot measure says the president could not set U.S. foreign policy if subject to "50 different legislatures setting the foreign policy of the country."

Ashburn said he feared the vote would create false expectations that it would lead to some shift in policy, and he noted that Californians had already voted on the war last November by taking control of Congress from Republicans. "

I think its a great idea, and no, I don't think We The People have already had our say on the war, especially after last week's cave-in. I'll do my part to get it on the ballot as an ititiative if the Gropenator doesn't sign it.
