Iraq elections held too soon
Source: The Examiner

WASHINGTON - A prominent Iraq war hawk who urged the Bush administration to oust Saddam Hussein and move quickly to democracy now says that U.S.-sponsored elections occurred too soon.

"I think we need some sort of authoritarian government in Iraq," said retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, who was an unofficial adviser to former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

With the war entering its fifth year and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki struggling, McInerney said Iraq needs more time to set up democratic institutions, such as a functioning police force and justice system, and to bring Sunni and Shiite Muslims together.

"I thought if they were given a chance at democracy they would seize it," said McInerney, a frequent commentator on the Fox News Channel. "I was fundamentally wrong.

This is their first elected government. They have never had a government that is supposed to help people."

2. does he mean like ours?
"They have never had a government that is supposed to help people."

i thought the point of the republican revolution was that gummint was NOT supposed to help people, that people were supposed to rely solely upon themselves. i guess he did not get the memo.

3. these freaks of nature had to
play with the world and lives and didn't have a clue as to the reality of any life - not even their own.

Now they want a "do over"

All I can say is they belong under a prison.

5. What we need is some sort of authoritarian government in Iraq...Hmmmm...
Now where would we find one...A ruthless, secular type who belongs to the minority so he can control the majority and protect the minority, but doesn't have any interest in sectarian fights, rules with an iron fist, is easily controlled by Western governments with cash, someone who has a history of working with the CIA so we know we can sort of trust him, and one that will allow us to steal their oil if we cut him in.....Now, where would we find such a guy?

:eyes:

Life is crazy isn't it? It's gonna turn out that we see Saddam was the BEST CASE scenario of leadership in Iraq we could have ever hoped for, and we are gonna spend a trillion dollars to find another Saddam!

6. That stood out for me, as well.
I knew from the beginning that eventually they will install another strongman, and they will spin it that this is the wish of the Iraqi people.

This strongman will acquiesce to the desire of the neocons to control the oil, in exchange for the "security" of our presence.

8. Do you really think were really there for a democratic Society?
Please... Were there for oil, down and dirty. If you think this administration gives a rats ass about a democracy in Iraq has blinders on.

9. Interesting that they are saying that now
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 01:58 AM by me b zola
Now that the word is out that the majority of the Iraqi Parliament wants the US out of Iraq and are refusing to hand over their oil rights. My guess is the neocons are pissed off that the Iraqis are more sophisticated than they thought.

The nerve of those Iraqi Parliament members who want the US out and are refusing to turn over their oil rights to a foreign government. :sarcasm:

10. to them
it is just an "experiment" whether Iraq gets better or drowns in blood.

Crazy people, all of them. How long people all over the world would have to put up with their "experiments" in nation-building?

14. I hate this whole "blame the Iraqis" meme. If the Iraqis only had to worry about pleasing Iraqis
their democracy would work about as well as anywhere else.

Their problem is they have two irreconcilable constituencies: Iraqis and Bush.

15. Gen. Jay Garner, who had successfully administered Kurdish region before war wanted elections SOONER
But Bushies objected because they knew an elected government would never rubber stamp their privatization scam.
