KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A boat which the defence ministry said Saturday was carrying Taleban fighters sank in a river in southern Afghanistan but there was no immediate information about casualties.

More than 60 people were onboard the boat, which sank in the Helmand river Friday, ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said, adding the cause of the accident was unknown.

‘We observed from the air that Taleban got on board the boat. It sunk as it was crossing the river,’ Azimi told AFP.

The fighters were escaping Afghan troops operating in the area in Helmand province, he added.

1. Note that it was "carrying" fighters
... "Taleban got on board the boat" i.e. there's no indication that all, most or even many on board were fighters. I doubt any civilians would have been in much of a position to object.

5. So, how was it determined that they were, indeed, Taliban?
Seems to me that "Taliban" has become a generic term, like "Charlie" was during the Viet Nam War.
