Bradley Schlozman is slated to testify Tuesday in the U.S. attorneys investigation.

WASHINGTON — Two years ago, in a speech at the Justice Department marking the 40th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Bradley J. Schlozman, then the acting chief of the department's civil rights division, found much to celebrate.

"The voting enforcement efforts of the civil rights division during this administration have been as strong, if not stronger, than ever," Schlozman declared. "We have a tremendous record, one that is a testament to the division's outstanding attorneys and staff."

Schlozman, a Bush administration political appointee, was also in the process of dismantling the ranks of career attorneys in the division, former employees contend.

Some of the division's most experienced lawyers resigned or were involuntarily transferred, often in favor of Republican loyalists who had a much different view of the laws they were sworn to uphold, the former employees allege.

1. When we get a Democratic president...
they need to seriously purge the DOJ of these career attorneys. They can't fire them outright but I'm sure they can tell them that if they do their job the way it is suppose to be done then they won't have to worry. But if they aren't willing to leave politics outside of their job then they should leave.

These Republican loyalists need to be ID'd and put on a watch list.

2. It's not the career lawyers that are the problem...
...by and large they're the ones that administer DOJ cases fairly and objectively.

It's the GOP political appointees and their loyalty tests that must be purged, and will be when the Dems win the White House.

5. Do you remember Monica Goodling?
If I recall she was also involved in hiring both political and career employment.

And she responded that she didn't recall whether she asked if they were asked questions prohibited for career appointees because some applicants also applied for both types of positions.

9. By 'career lawyer' I meant those that pre-date Bush.
I consider Goodling an appointee.

10. Doesn't matter what *she* was...
...she was involved in hiring career lawyers, and she used political criteria to do so.

Therefore we now have political cronies in career positions at Justice. Also -- don't forget -- 150 graduates of Regent University are now in the ranks of the DOJ. I'm guessing the vast majority of them are in career positions.

How sad that our institutions are being destroyed from within in this way.

3. It's the repug version of Soviet Commissars.
I was told years ago by someone in DC that the administration was putting so many of their ideologues in positions throughout the government that if a Democrat actually got elected they wouldn't be able to get anything done.

6. So far, CSPAN doesn't have it posted, but
the meeting's not scheduled until 2:30 tomorrow afternoon according to the Senate Judiciary website. They'll probably post it later.

14. I wish I was connvinced anything would come out of this
but I'm afraid he will get up there, dissemble and outright lie, the Dems will harrumph about it and there it will end, Drop like a rock. No consequences no nothin.

Whatever happened to the subpoenas for Rove? I still hold out a bit of hope for Waxman but far as I'm concerned Leahy is nothing more than a pompous windbag without the courage of his beliefs.
