Iraqi Blasts Kill 2 Coalition Troops

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi insurgents launched several attacks in the southern city of Karbala on Saturday, and there were 20 coalition casualties, a military spokesman said. Two coalition troops were reported killed.

The attackers struck with a car bomb, mortars and machine guns in separate places in Karbala, said U.S. Maj. Ralph Manos, a spokesman for the Polish-led multinational force responsible for security in the area.

"There were different types of attacks at different places," he said. The attackers targeted two military coalition camps at the city's university and at a police station, as well as the mayor's office.

Col. Mariusz Michalski, another coalition spokesman, told the Polish news agency PAP that two coalition soldiers were killed at one of the attacks at a Bulgarian base.

Blasts Reported in Southern Iraqi City

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Explosions rocked the southern city of Karbala on Saturday, and smoke and fire rose from the local government building. There was no immediate word on casualties.

Witnesses said mortar shells struck the government building in the early afternoon, and that a car bomb exploded near a university during a visit by a U.S. delegation. The reports could not be immediately confirmed.

"We are aware of an incident in Karbala," said U.S. Air Force Capt. Patricia Teran-Matthews, a spokeswoman for the U.S.-led coalition. "We are awaiting the details."

http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=429278§ion=news

KERBALA, Iraq (Reuters) - At least six foreign soldiers have been killed and 27 injured in a string of attacks on U.S.-allied forces and Iraqi targets in the southern city of Kerbala, military officials say.

...

"There were six coalition soldiers...killed," Major Ralph Manos, an officer with the Polish-led multinational force based in the region, told Reuters.

He declined to give the soldiers' nationalities, but Bulgaria confirmed four of its soldiers had been killed in Kerbala and a Thai foreign ministry spokesman said two Thai soldiers had died in a bomb attack at their military base.

Neither of those countries have very big units in Iraq, as far as I know. I'm sure this will be very demoralizing to them ... probably the intended effect.

Rest in peace, soldiers.

It is also true that the deployment of their troops to Iraq has been very controversial and unpopular in those countries, particularly in Spain and Poland. I agree with your analysis that these attacks were intended to demoralize and put pressure on those governments that were foolish enough to put their citizens in harm's way.

14. Repost: This attack-rate claim (50/day to 15/day) can not possibly be true
If it were true, the slope of the reported-casualty graph would be correspondingly flatter -- but the slope remains unchanged for the entire length of the insurgency. And the slope is significantly steeper over the last week.

Only a matter of time before the lies are exposed. This is mass resistance to the occupation, and has nothing to do with Saddam.

15. NYT: Up to 11 Die as Attacks Shatter Fragile Calm in Southern Iraq
KARBALA, Iraq, Dec. 27 — At least four soldiers from the occupying forces and as many as nine Iraqis were killed and dozens more soldiers and civilians wounded Saturday in attacks in this Shiite holy city 60 miles southwest of Baghdad.

The attacks brought a burst of violence to what had been a relatively calm southern Iraq.

...

In Baghdad, the United States military command said four soldiers had been killed and 37 troops wounded in the attacks, including 5 American soldiers. The command gave no figure for the number of Iraqi civilians wounded. In spare detail, it said that the four men who died were at a "coalition battlefield base camp" in Karbala, and that the wounded Americans were "near a military facility" in the city when they were attacked.

A Bulgarian soldier who was standing guard on a road to the university early Saturday evening said that a water tanker had exploded after it drove past a police station outside the university campus and ran into the Bulgarian military base. About 500 Bulgarian soldiers are stationed in Karbala.

Many of the injured at the university were students, witnesses said.

The ensuing explosion, between 11 a.m. and noon, destroyed the base.
