Cuba ordains first woman bishop

By Stephen Gibbs
BBC News, Havana

The Episcopal Church in Cuba has consecrated a woman bishop - the first in the developing world.

The Reverend Nerva Cot is now the 11th female bishop in the world.

As Ms Cot was consecrated, she was surrounded by senior Church leaders from within Cuba, as well as the bishops of Panama, Haiti and Miami.

Only the Catholic Church, which has the largest Christian congregation in the country, did not send a senior official to the ceremony.

Communist Cuba was officially atheist until it changed its constitution in 1992.

Why would the Catholic Church snub the consecration of an Episcopal bishop? Was it because the bishop was a woman?

whatever will they do?

5. Huh? Cuba revises its constitution?
I thought that Castro was THE constitution. :sarcasm:

-

Coming up in the next legislative session of Cuba's National Assembly are ratifying gay marriage (civil unions) and sex reassignment surgeries covered by the Ministry of Health and the national h-c system.

-

All are sure signs of a brutal dictatorship. :sarcasm:

6. Uh, oh! The Bishop from Miami must remember to have people check his car
for bombs for the next year or so every time he expects to go anywhere.

They have murdered people there who have supported dialogue with Cuba, who have supported removing the travel ban, removing the embargo, or, have even spoken out publicly about too much reactionary "exile" violence in Miami!

These same people are going to be fit to be tied knowing a Miami Episcopalian official lended moral support by personally attending.

They even hate the Cuban dissidents who believe any change in Cuba must come from within, and not be Miami-directed!

Congratulations to Cuba for another groundbreaking step: one among many.

By Stephen Gibbs
BBC News, Havana

June 10, 2007

The Episcopal Church in Cuba is due to consecrate the first female bishop in the developing world.

The Reverend Nerva Cot, a former teacher, has said she views her appointment as a tremendous honour.

The service in Havana is expected to be attended by senior figures from the Episcopal Church around the world.

Havana's small Episcopal cathedral is expected to be overflowing with worshippers witnessing the consecration of Ms Cot.

Among those due to participate is the head of the Episcopal Church in the US, Katharine Jefferts Schori, and other high level representatives from Canada, the Caribbean and Europe.

9. The Catholic boycott was because it was a woman
As women priests are seen as an abomination to a fair number, epically in the Vatican.
