Iraqi Insurgent Attacks Kill 13, Hurt 172
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=540&ncid=716&e=1&u=/ap/20031227/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

KARBALA, Iraq - Rebels unleashed a coordinated assault on military bases and the governor's office in the southern city of Karbala on Saturday, killing 13 people — including six soldiers from the U.S.-led occupation force and six Iraqi police officers — and wounding at least 172, officials said.

Four of the dead soldiers were from Bulgaria and two from Thailand. An Iraqi civilian also was killed. Attackers detonated four suicide car bombs and fired mortar shells and grenades, wounding at least 37 other coalition soldiers, including five Americans and 19 Bulgarians, U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt said in Baghdad.

Some 135 Iraqi civilians and police officers also were wounded, said Ali al-Arzawi, deputy director of Karbala General Hospital.

In other attacks Saturday, rebels detonated three homemade bombs that set aflame a fuel depot and injured six American soldiers.

from the reuters story....

<The attacks, part of a wave of guerrilla raids in Baghdad and deadly bombings to the north, dealt yet another blow to hopes the December 13 capture of former president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) would soon rein in violence in Iraq that Washington blames on Saddam loyalist and Muslim militants. >

...... :eyes: this is getting real old fast.

5. Damn!
And someone was saying here yesterday that we were safer because the dictator had been caught and Howard Dean was a fool for saying otherwise.

I like for Dean to be right, but not at this cost! This is terrible. The poor families, of all nationalities. The sheeple can't elect Bush* after this bloodshed.

6. They called them INSURGENTS and rebels!
Not terrorists. I think that's remarkable.

THE WAR IN IRAQ IS NOT PART OF THE WAR ON TERROR. That is a lie perpetrated by the Bush administration.

7. Saddam loyalists doesn't seem to fit anymore either
These are just Iraqi patriots who want their country back. I don't blame them. I would too if I were an Iraqi.

20. Bush should watch out for unified opposition
If someone creates the impression that the opposition is standing behind a single individual, like Gen. Marcos in Chiapas, for instance, who personifies that movement, then Iraqi Nationalism in a popular way is born, and Bush loses the big mo.

21. Sorry, but wrong
These terrorists dont just "want their country back". They want their POWER back that Saddam gave them. If they were simply fighting to get us (and the other countries) to leave, they wouldn't attack their own people (civilians living in the "wrong" areas), they wouldn't attack mosques, the UN, the red cross, infrastructure, etc. They just want to be able to come back and make things the way they USED TO BE. In time the populace will turn against them, but only when they really believe the "old guys" wont be able to return to power.

9. Yes bring home our toops now!!
I'd rather have 25 million Iraqis in Baathist bondage than one more American soldier dead. They are not worth it.

11. No, you need to include death from sanctions.
And you just need to keep in mind that while Saddam killed lots of adults, the US made a point of starving kids.

16. good catch
Yes, that is a significant change. It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out from here, especially when we try to install some "friendly" government and "get out" (hahahahaha) before the election.

Everything this administration does is simply to put up a plausible front so things look good for the election. All hell can break loose afterwards, and it won't matter; they'll have the supreme court, and we'll be in deep yogurt all around and for a very long time.

17. Insurgents ? no, Resistance
They are going to continue to resist our occupation and there's not a damn thing we can do about it except lose troops daily.
These guys are bent on us leaving
and we are going to be forced to leave sooner or later-
-the sooner the better

23. How does one become an insurgent?
If someone attacks your country and you fight back, isnÕt that what one does? Only in ÒBushits AmericaÓ does the meaning get spun for max effect.

Just like those few lone miscreants, the Viet Cong in 1963-64.

And WE know where that went.
