Gillespie leaving job to replace Bartlett at White House

Edward W. Gillespie will step down as Republican Party of Virginia chairman today to become counselor to President Bush in the White House.

He will replace Dan Bartlett, who resigned recently to return to his native Texas. Several GOP sources, requesting anonymity, confirmed the move.

Sources said Gillespie, a longtime power broker on Capitol Hill, was reluctant to leave as state party chairman after a tenure of only six months, but he answered the president's pleadings.

Rumors of Gillespie's resignation already have triggered considerable infighting among Virginia GOP factions to succeed him, GOP sources said.

2. Swapping one insider for another insider
Gillespie's been part of the inner circle for quite some time now. I suppose the silver lining is that Mary Matalin wasn't tapped.

10. Some big GOP operative - Ed ? (think it might have been Gillespie)
was involved in a scheme in the 2000 elections to pay black ministers to preach anti-dem pro-repub messages and try to coerce church members to at the least not vote. Is this the same Ed? The guy I am thinking about was involved in the Reagan campaign (at least in 1984) and was an ally of Roger Aisles (now running Faux news).

8. No Shit Al He Is A Fecking Rat Slime Ball
I don't know what it is about Ed, maybe it's the fact that he is an unprincipled narcissistic slut, but whenever I see his face on the TV I want to punch him REALLY hard.

12. done deal~ Bush Names Ed Gillespie New White House Counselor
Bush Names Ed Gillespie New White House Counselor

WASHINGTON (AP)--Ed Gillespie, a high-dollar Washington lobbyist and long-time go-to guy for President George W. Bush and the Republican Party, is replacing Dan Bartlett as White House counselor in the president's inner circle.

"He's a seasoned hand. He's got excellent judgment. He's a strategic thinker. And I know he'll do a fine job," Bush said after having lunch with Gillespie and Bartlett.

Gillespie, a former head of the national GOP, will take on Bartlett's same duties and title as a senior presidential adviser. He starts June 27, in order to have some overlap with Bartlett, who is leaving around July 4.

Bartlett, 36, has been one of Bush's most trusted advisers, a near-constant presence at Bush's side and his longest-serving aide. Bartlett has been with Bush for nearly 14 years, from his first campaign for governor of Texas, through two races for the White House and more than six years of a presidency marked by costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and an ongoing battle against terrorism.

With three children under the age of 4, including twins, he announced his resignation June 1 to begin a career outside of government.

14. "...answered the president's pleadings"??? Pleadings???
Yeah, SURE.

Love these little subtleties some of these news writers put in. It may well be subconscious in the minds of many of them. They may not realize how some of their word choices are loaded with other connotations. "Pleadings" connotes the idea of supplication, begging, on the defensive (which, of course, bush IS), asking with humility, a fairly benign inference that very subtly suggests a positive about the subject who's making the "pleadings." Also, it's alliterative, so maybe it was somebody trying to have a little fun and creativity with wordplay. Could also be, as happens many times in newsrooms, the entry-level "news" people get started as writers, editors, and producers before they move up to actual field reporting. Sometimes those newbies aren't aware of what they're doing. Then again, if it's a bush sympathizer, he or she may indeed be choosing words specifically.
