Senate Dems Plan New Round of Iraq Votes
Source: Associated Press

(06-12) 16:23 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday the Senate will face another round of votes on the Iraq war before the July Fourth recess, a strategy intended to show that Democrats are not giving up on efforts to bring troops home.

While the measures are unlikely to pass, the announcement comes as party leaders are under fire by many liberal supporters for passing legislation that funds the war through September.

"We're going to hold the president's feet to the fire," Reid, D-Nev., told reporters after emerging from a closed-door meeting with Senate Democrats.

Under Reid's plan, the Senate will cast separate votes on whether to cut off funding for combat next year, order troop withdrawals within four months, impose stricter standards on the length of combat tours and rescind congressional authorization for the Iraqi invasion.

2. What are the Democrats planning this time?
Will they:

A) Slap wrists
B) Announce (again) that impeachment is off the table
C) Make small, frustrated sighing noises
D) Frown in dismay
E) Hold hearings and cluck about their findings
F) Wag their collective finger in the general direction of the White House

That they will make lots of noise about "standing up to the President," unceremoniously cave in and then dislocate their shoulders (again) while patting themselves on the back for having used strong language is a given.

6. Maybe they will BASH each other into total ineffectuality.
What are you planning? Do tell us what you will do to solve the problem, when not throwing stones.

17. So you are saying...
That because I can not do something on my own, my opinion is worthless and I should just keep my mouth shut and do as I am ordered by others?

Wow. Just... wow. That attitude exemplifies what is wrong with the Democratic Party and with American politics as a whole. It would be interesting to hear your opinion on my fundamental civic duty to vote.

Tell me, which is better: to speak up when one can not change things, or to do nothing when one can change things?

You never give up. You do not raise the white flag. You pound and pound on the battlements until you crack it open. Not every attack gets through, but one will eventually.

When Americans see some fight, they will vote for Democrats to fight for them. When they see meandering around himming and hawwing and making excuses, they vote for no one.

If it takes a bunch of pissed off, belligerent liberals to goad them into doing it, I am glad for it. At least they are now listening, and that is a LOT better than the last 6 years of sucking up to beltway advisors with silver tongues and turd strategies.

14. I think maybe the poll numbers showing the erosion of support....
for dems has forced this early play. Even the Dems must realize they have a very limited amount of time to change course - which is what the 2006 election was about.

18. I like these votes even if they fail. Esp. right before July 4th.
The system requires these votes, and every time the GOP kepe the troops in harm's way it's one more nail in the GOP coffin.

Of course I'd rather have the votes to come home pass, but, just because they might fail, some say we shouldn't try.

I disagree.

Some voters are so self absorbed that we need to have these issues dominate the news for a year or more. If that means another failed attempt every other month, fine.

It is better than doing nothing to stand up to the PNAC.
