Waxman Says GSA Chief Threatened to Retaliate After Testimony
Nadine Elsibai

June 13 (Bloomberg) -- House Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (news, bio, voting record) said there is ``credible evidence'' that the head of the General Services Administration threatened retaliation against employees who aided a probe into her political activities.

Waxman, at a hearing today, said Lurita Alexis Doan told investigators under oath that those who supplied information in the probe were substandard workers who ``will not be getting promoted and will not be getting bonuses or special awards or anything of that nature.''

Doan has been investigated for allegedly asking GSA officials during a January briefing how they could ``help our candidates,'' referring to Republicans, win the next election. The Hatch Act prohibits partisan activity on government property. Doan has denied wrongdoing. The GSA is the government's acquisitions and property management agency.

Six GSA political appointees who appeared before the committee voluntarily testified that she made the statement about helping politicians during a presentation that Scott Jennings, deputy to White House political adviser Karl Rove, gave at the agency's headquarters in January, Waxman said.

11. Just what I was thinking - a real piece of work.
And mind-numbingly stupid that she would document these words without any thought about Chairman Waxman's tenacious regard for those in his sights.

3. You would think...
but this is 21st-Century America. Last century, we could impeach a man for next-to-nothing wrong. This century, we can't impeach a man for virtually everything wrong.

5. I only watched a small part, but during that part Waxman said
that the most severe penalty for violating the Hatch Act is being fired. Apparently she can't be indicted? I don't understand.

9. Probably not...
There is no way to compel a US Attorney to do the job. Prosecution is discretionary.

6. The way she tried to squirm out of her threats based on not knowing her grammar was shameful.
It was surreal watching her argue back and forth with the Democratic representatives on the committee about how what she said wasn't what she said because she doesn't understand how to put a sentence together.

Yet, apparently she's smart enough to be in charge of a $66 billion budget?!

12. You can see them now . . .
Leaning back against the door jamb, insolent look on their insipid little faces as they shift the toothpick from one side of their mouth to the other. "What are you gonna do about it . . . punk?"

Well, Congress?
