Three Sunni mosques burned south of Baghdad-police (Thursday)

BAGHDAD, June 14 (Reuters) - Three Sunni Muslim mosques were attacked and burned by unidentified gunmen south of Baghdad early on Thursday, police said, a day after suspected al Qaeda militants blew up the minarets of a revered Shi'ite mosque.

Two of the mosques were burned in Iskandariya and a third in nearby Mahaweel. All were badly damaged in the apparent reprisal attacks.

2. Aghh. Another round of internecine violence. I *really* wish we would back off,
support broad regional alternatives to our occupation and this civil war.

There has to be a lead moderator organization/state willing and able to bring the parties to a table.

The Middle East is becoming more and more fragmented, more violent and more abandoned.

As I've mentioned before, I'm no fan of partition. Yet, the facts of the matter seem to imply a de facto partition - whether we want it or not. Maybe the option ought to be considered. I don't know. One obvious result, though, would be creating a second Jerusalem in Baghdad, mired in political, social, religious and violent conflict.

In aftermath of Samarra shrine bombing, 10 Sunni mosques attacked
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- Four people died in sectarian fighting in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, and attackers struck 10 Sunni mosques in and south of Baghdad in the aftermath of Wednesday's bombing of Al-Askariya Mosque -- a major Shiite Muslim shrine in Samarra, police said Thursday.

Thousands in cities across Iraq staged angry but peaceful demonstrations protesting the second bombing at the shrine, which also was struck and badly damaged in a February 2006 attack -- a major event that spawned widespread sectarian violence and population displacement in Iraq.

Much of the violence since the Wednesday morning strike came despite a curfew imposed in Baghdad and other regions.
