G8 agreement on climate change a "disgrace": Al Gore

MILAN (Reuters) - Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore
denounced a deal by world leaders on curbing greenhouse
gases as "a disgrace disguised as an achievement," saying
on Thursday the agreement struck last week was insufficient.

The dedicated climate crusader, whose 2006 global warming
documentary won an Oscar, said leaders at last week's G8
summit in Germany had not risen to the challenge to respond
to what he calls a "planetary emergency."

G8 leaders agreed to pursue "substantial" reductions in
greenhouse gas emissions, stopping short of German Chancellor
Angela Merkel's hopes for concrete numerical commitments on
emission reductions, including her key aim to cut gases by 50
percent by 2050.

"The eight most powerful nations gathered and were unable
to do anything except to say 'We had good conversations and
we agreed that we will have more conversations, and we will
even have conversations about the possibility of doing
something in the future on a voluntary basis perhaps."'

1. Our politicians are all too spineless to do what's required
This is the reason I wish Gore would run. He's the only one I trust to do something about global warming. We need bold leadership on this before it's too late.

2. Yes Gore...And You Can Be More Effective In Current Position
All those who say Al can do more Outside of the WH, in his current role giving speeches about global warming, should WAKE UP and smell the coffee!! There is no greater position to effect change, than being POTUS.

We wish you would run Al, and start fixing some of the CRAP we've suffered through these past 6-8 years.

3. No, it is those who only cheerlead that need to wake up
Because you are missing his point completely. It isn't about HIM but about US. And to ask him to fix the CRAP WE made if we weren't and aren't willing to do it ourselves is downright arrogant and placing unfair expectations on this man who has done and is already doing more than any president EVER did on this crisis. And his current role isn't just giving speeches, it is as the leader of a GLOBAL movement to inspire and mobilize the world to action to solve this crisis, and that is a very important role to play at this time in history. More so than any "politician" just playing the game.

4. Gore needs help
RestoreGore is right. Most of us are unwilling to make the personal changes in our lifestyle that are necessary to collectively achieve the carbon dioxide emission reduction goals in the Kyoto Treaty, which Gore advocates.

Most of us choose to continue burning fossil fuel in our vehicles, homes, hot water heaters, etc, and do little or nothing to reduce our personal carbon emissions.

Some are skeptical that reducing carbon dioxide will make any difference in the overall global atmospheric temperature, and they are unwilling to act. Others believe such reductions may help but are also unwilling to act.

11. It seems many don't want to help, they just give ultimatums and tell him what to do
Sure makes his book all the more timely.

10. Oh Yes I do, and I'm not a political operative just putting out feelers...
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 07:33 AM by RestoreGore
Or trying to compete or put out false impressions here by USING this climate crisis to score political brownie points because everyone now is vying for their "candidate" as if this is one grand stage. I am SINCERE about what I type regarding my thoughts on this and my support for what he is doing, because at this point in time it is more important than ANYTHING ELSE. And I GET IT alright, and I get that Mr. Gore (who is doing more now than any "president" ever could or would to solve this crisis with a bought and sold Congress and an anesthesized populace that cares more about entertainment than education) and others in the scientific community are correct when they state that this planet IS RUNNING OUT OF TIME. I then don't have time to sit here in useless flame wars and cheerlead for a BS political campaign when I see what is going on in this world brought on by that BS politics that won't wait for all of this pettiness and ignorance to pass. If WE collectively do not get our act together NOW, "elections" will pale in comparison to the repercussions that will come from not doing so. So if you are not vocally discussing this off this medium, and warning people and giving them solutions, and doing all you can to support Al Gore and other scientists in moblizing PEOPLE into action to save this planet which is the most important cause right now regarding our future, then YOU don't get it.

5. Because Nothing Was Done!! What was the Point????
Heeeeelllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

When are people going to realize just how catastrophic the Bush Administration has been to the world, and the USA? Is Al Gore THE ONLY sane person talking anymore on a national level?
Greg Palast is right. Our national media is beholden to corporate interests, therefore their integrity is compromised. Randi Rhodes recently endorsed Gore for president on her show, should he run.

Can anyone beleive that nearly all of the GOP presidential candidates are now in favor of Torture??? Is this the USA??? What on earth has happened to this country?
The technology to change/reduce/wean ourselves of the oil we use in this nation is within our grasp. We must embrace sanity and justice.

12. Why should he "run or shut up"?
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 07:16 AM by Nihil
Personally I think that he is by far the best option for POTUS but
that isn't my choice to make. I would certainly hope that he never
"shuts up" simply to suit Republicans or Repub-Lite Democrats who
are getting embarrassed about someone pointing out that none of their
petty emperors have got any clothes.

He has achieved more(*) with one film/DVD than any president since Carter.

Regardless of whether he runs or not, his voice needs to continue to
be heard above the braying of the bought-out politicians and the
bleating of their wilfully ignorant followers.

(*) Edit: "more"="more for the environment"

13. Why have you disabled your profile?
I really wonder at times how many Repulicans or DLCers come on these forums diguised as supporting the man and begging him to run just to divert from discussing the issue in context. And make no mistake about it, those who do NOTHING but the "run al run" rhetoric are at this point a distraction from the issue being seriously discussed in the context it needs to be discussed. So what exactly is your motivation for what you are saying?

7. Yes Al, it was a pile of caca del toro!
You knew it was BS when Tony Blair characterized Bush's environmental speech to G8 as a good "constructive speech."

The world needs more Al Gores and less Tony Blairs.

14. Um ... Al?
If you really want to influence G8 leaders in the future, you could do it! You could have a front row seat at the summit. You could certainly show them the error of their ways ... Mr. President. :patriot:
