Push for Blair as new EU president
Source: Financial Times

Tony Blair, the British prime minister, could end up swapping Downing Street for a job as the first full-time European Union president, under a plan being actively touted by Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president.

Mr Sarkozy is understood to have discussed the idea with other EU leaders ahead of next week’s European summit, Mr Blair’s last major international event as prime minister.

His support for Mr Blair taking on a big European job is a remarkable sign of Anglo-French rapprochement since Mr Sarkozy replaced Jacques Chirac as president last month.

German diplomats say Mr Sarkozy put his plan to Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, while EU officials say the French president has also touted his idea around other capitals, including Madrid. But the British prime minister remains unpopular with governments in countries such as Italy and Spain, which opposed the Iraq war. Mr Blair’s failure to take Britain into the euro will also count against him.

7. Don't bother having a president for the EU - go for just the First Lady instead with no powers

5. Fat chance
The European Union members won't trust a polarizing figure like Sarkozy.

And they're still doubting Britain's commitment to the EU. The Euro question is still unresolved.

We're not even sure Great Britain's parliament would even come close to approving this move.

Get your ass over to Carlyle, Tony. They're the only ones who'll have you, no questions asked.

6. Corporate Predator Musical Chairs--so fun to watch!
Let's see. We could have Hillary "free trade" (global corporate piracy) Clinton start by appointing the new PM of England, say Lord Hutton. The Queen could come over here and do the wife duties for Hillary. Donald Rumsfeld could become the CEO of Halliburton (now headquartered in Dubai), while Dick moves over to Blackwater or CACCI, to run the death squads in South America. Bill would be ambassador-at-large to South American, to put a pretty face on the slaughter of union organizers and leftists. Joe Lieberman could be our ambassador to the UN. Paul Wolfowitz could become Tony's chief aide and barricuda at the EU. Joe Biden could be in charge of draining America's coffers to the 7th generation for billions and billions and billions of dollars in more war profiteer contracts. Rove would retire to...where DOES he come from? ...no place. Put him at the EAC (federal Election Assistance Commission, arm of the White House for fiddling elections in the corporate interest; he's real good at it). And don't forget Buscolini and Anzar, out of jobs in Italy and Spain--real bricks of the war effort and fascism in Europe. World Bank? IMF? Czar of Iraq? Czar of Iran? They'd make excellent Shahs or Sultans.

I hope never to see Tony Blair's face, or hear his Texas British accent, on the world stage again. (Why do so many Bushites speak like they just sucked helium?) Begone, Tony! EU, I beg you!

8. Uh oh...
reminds me of a conversation I had with a fundie Christian who explained various theories about the Anti-Christ to me. One idea is that the EU President might become the Anti-Christ. If Tony Blair gets the job then I'll know it really is the End Times...

...I wouldn't bother with theories from the Left Behind books.

As to Blair becoming EU president, the thing thing that may well count against him in this regard is that he has kept Britain out of the Euro and he has not altered the British from their Euro-scepticism at all. In short he may not have the necessary Europhile credentials in some peoples eyes.

Mind you, as a moderate Euro-sceptic myself I have to admit that I've been fairly happy with Blair's stance on EU matters since he came to office, even if that may have been motivated by a knowledge that the British public don't really like the EU all that much.
