SENATORS DEMAND JUSTICE DEPT. INVESTIGATION INTO TIM GRIFFIN, RNC 2004 VOTE CAGING ALLEGATIONS
Sens. Kennedy and Whitehouse Send Letter to DoJ Inspector General's Office Seeking Probe into RNC Voter Supression Tactics

Inquiry Into What Justice Officials Knew About Griffin's Vote Caging Activities When He Was Named as US Attorney for Arkansas

Senators Kennedy and Whitehouse have sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales demanding a probe by the DoJ's Office of the Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility into "allegations that the Republican National Committee engaged in 'vote caging' during the 2004 elections."

The letter, sent today to Gonzales, also requests an investigation into "whether any Department officials were aware of allegations that Tim Griffin had engaged in caging when he was appointed United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas, and whether appropriate action was taken."

The complete letter, and a press release sent along with it, is posted in full at the end of this article.

"The Republican Party has a long and ignominious record of caging – much of it focused on the African American community," Kennedy and Whitehouse explain in their letter which gives details of the RNC using voting caging tactics to suppress minority voters in both 1981 and 1986. After both incidents, the GOP had signed consent decrees that they would not engage in the activity in the future...

17. You would have thought John Kerry, who "lost" a presidency due to guys like Griffin
would have gladly signed his name as sponsor.

7. Well they're not the majority ya'know ...oh wait... I mean
they don't have the votes ... I mean ... it's really mean spirited to be a decisive Democrat.

There is not enough evidence in the world to make the Dems do anything like confront Bu$hCo. The only reason these stories are alive in because bloggers will not let them die.

4. Ya know, it would go ALOT QUICKER if they START with ROVE,
and go down the ranks, rather than start where they have and try to go up! Because thats where it will wind up.

6. I might have seen a memo but I don't recall, Senator
I might have had a meeting, it is on my calendar, but I don't recall being there.

I am so impressed, interviewing the AG will be a real gold mine of information.

If they want to do something about it, they NEED to start the impeachment proceedings in the House, I am sure that
Kennedy could have influence with Pelosi, they have mountains of
evidence of wrongdoing. They need to do what we elected them to do, act like leaders.

10. Actually, Yes. But i read Bradbog and Palast everyday
So I got the word regardless of the hearings

I've met Brad Friedman and spent a weekend hanging out with him and Andy Stephenson
and I've never seen someone work as hard to get to the bottom of a story
except in old movies about reporters like we don't have anymore if we ever did.

I've spoken to Palast by phone and beyond his ease for self promotion
He actually has a substance to promote.

so yes
We have to kick our pols to do the right thing
every inch of the way.
but we have net siblings that are truly kicking ass
no external motivation required

11. Just a few positive things to consider here.
1. I very much doubt that the Senators would send such a letter unless they had clear, compelling and actionable evidence that the crime of caging had taken place.

2. A Senate hearing on the subject could be spun as a politically motivated witch-hunt. (by and large they're warlocks)

3. What could be better than having the Bush Administration investigate/prosecute itself?

4. I am assuming that the statute of limitations will not have run out in January 2009, for a crime committed in 2004. So any foot dragging, stonewalling or defiance would likely only delay the hefty political fallout of convictions.

5. Republicans are facing rather dismal 2008 election prospects and could hardly afford to have the bitter legacy of the Bush Administration carry into the 2010&2012 election cycles.

I do see this as a positive development, though I can appreciate those that are skeptical.

13. Yea, right....
Gonzo was in the room when Rove asked him about the "legal risk" of Tim's caging ever being prosecuted; His response was there is little or no risk, especially if POTUS moved him from private council to A.G.

Gonzo will not respond to the letter other than in private; "That drunken Ted is at it again" "As if!"

16. This "vote caging" stinks, but is it actually a CRIME?
I've researched the Voting Rights Act and I can find nothing about criminal penalties for violation.

19. See the fifth paragraph...
...under "Mass challenges" at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/3956129.stm .

In Washington, well-known civil rights attorney, Ralph Neas, noted that US federal law prohibits targeting challenges to voters, even if there is a basis for the challenge, if race is a factor in targeting the voters.
