Romney objects to campaign attacks

By BROCK VERGAKIS, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 26 minutes ago

SALT LAKE CITY - Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

"Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone's faith — those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling," Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney's remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain's campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

1. Maybe Mormons in Utah and Idaho will finally start to get it.
The Republican Party does not accept you! They are only using you!
The Christian Coalition and conservative protestants don't accept you and they're the ones running the religious right movement. Stop voting for people who hate you!

The Bob Jones and Dr. Dobson crowd are no different than the protestant ministers who led mobs to kick the Mormons out of Missouri and Illinois.

4. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker's e-mail
Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker's e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney's religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: "Thought you'd find this interesting."

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

6. While attacks on a candidate's religious views is as old as the nation itself
(Jefferson was called an "atheist" and "infidel" by the supporters of other candidates), there was a time, mostly during the 19th century, when Americans didn't choose their President based on a candidate's religious views, and candidates didn't get on their knees and pray in front of crowds to show how pious they supposedly were.

Unless a candidate believes in human sacrifice, a voter is an absolute idiot to take into consideration a candidate's religion or religious views.

7. As long as a candidate pushes their faith out into the public
I will consider them less worthy.

Those that do not use their faith as a cover I will give more weight.

8. I want to see us get to the place
where a candidate, if asked, can tell everyone that his faith is between him and his or her God. I want someone to say that they will entertain no questions about their faith, and cite the 'no religious test for office' portion of the Constitution.

Maybe if there is one strong candidate with backbone enough to do this, we can stop all these fights about faith.

Anyone who brings their faith into the political arena is fair game for criticism and ridicule. I don't know how much of this Romney has done. If he has refused to discuss his faith from the beginning, then he should be left alone. A person's faith should shape the way they live and should be apparent to anyone looking at that person. That should be the end of the discussion.

10. Mormons are fundamentally different than the fundies.
The Mormon hierarchy is totally backward, make no mistake, but they will NEVER be accepted by the fundies because they do not share the same religion, fundamentally. LDS has its own, distinct theology. It's like santeria with regard to Catholicism.

12. Any Republican would be ill-advised to bash the Mormon religion considering
they vote heavily Republican. Of course, obviously some Republican politicians consider the Southern Baptists more important. I don't know how important Utah is in the general election. I think it's a shame to bash anyone based on their religion. Whether it's Catholicism, Islam, Evangelical Christian, Judaism, Buddhism or LDS should not be an issue. A person's values and attitudes may be founded in their religion, or they may not. One should be judged by their actions - and of course, their political party. ;-)
