Ex-SoCal councilwoman could be deported
Source: Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - All of her life, Zoila Meyer believed she was an American. She even won election to the City Council of Adelanto.

But now she is facing a threat of deportation for illegally voting, because she never became a citizen after being brought to this country from Cuba when she was 1 year old.

"To be honest with you, I'm scared. How can they just pluck me out of my family, my kids?" the 40-year-old mother of four said in a telephone interview Friday.

"If they can do this to me, they can do it to anybody," she said.

1. But it wasn't HER idea to come to the US!

And she didn't vote knowing that she WASN'T a citizen. Let her apply for citizenship and leave her alone.

2. Umm, how could she go this long without seeing her birth certificate?
This is too little information to make a snap judgement about in either direction. I'd like to know how she got married, or applied for any sort of job without some form of birth certificate? How could she get her driver's license, etc.

I'd have to have those questions answered before anything else is done to her.

3. She applied to become a "Naturalized citizen" and my guess is that...

She showed "proof" that she applied for citizenship? Can that be enough? I know it could take years but I don't know much about immigration permits, etc. Another thing, Cubans unlike Mexicans, Haitians, et al. are "political refugees" and can qualify for "expedited" legal permanent residency on their first year in the USA. Why she waited to long?

4. there's still not enough information on this case
From reading the post, she seems to be claiming she didn't KNOW she was not an American citizen. You cannot apply for jobs, or a wedding certificate, etc., without having a valid birth certificate, and that would have her place of birth on it.

I'm not accusing her of doing anything wrong, I just find it hard to believe that she's gone THIS long without some sort of indication that there might be a problem.

6. Maybe she believed her parents became citizens when
she was a child and that, therefore, she was automatically awarded citizenship. Maybe her parents did not become citizens.

5. Wait a minute, doesn't she fall under the "dry foot" rule?
She was from Cuba. I'm suprised it wasn't taken care of for her when the family came over 30+ years ago. Going through school, getting a driver's licence, getting married - all these events should have also triggered some sort of alert she wasn't naturalized if she did them in California. She'd have needed a birth certificate and naturalization papers at least for school and the driver's licence.

Also, I wonder - is she a Dem?

7. This is not America...
A little piece of you
The little peace in me
Will die
For this is not america

Blossom fails to bloom
This season
Promise not to stare
Too long
For this is not a miracle

There was a time
A storm that blew so pure
For this could be the biggest sky
And I could have
The faintest idea

Snowman melting
From the inside
Falcon spirals
to the ground
So bloody red
Tomorrows clouds

A little piece of you
The little piece in me
Will die
For this is not america

There was a time
A wind that blew so young
For this could be the biggest sky
And I could have the faintest idea

This could be the biggest sky
This could be a miracle
This could be etc
