U.K. official denies urging Iraq apology

LONDON - The new deputy leader of Britain's governing Labour Party on Monday denied saying the government should apologize over Iraq, despite a broadcast debate showing her agreeing that an apology was in order.

Justice Minister Harriet Harman said "I agree" when her rival Jon Cruddas said the Labour Party should "say sorry" for the war during a British Broadcasting Corp. television debate on May 29.

On Monday, however she tried to deny making the comments: "I've never said the government should apologize," she told BBC radio.

Harman won the deputy leadership title in a run-off vote on Sunday when most Cruddas supporters voted for her after their candidate was eliminated.
