U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton was injured in an accident Wednesday on his Pike County property and taken to a Jackson area hospital, the Pike County sheriff said.

Sheriff Mark Shepherd said he did not know the extent of Lampton’s injuries or what condition he was in tonight.

Lampton was taken from a McComb hospital to River Oaks Hospital in Flowood. A spokeswoman said she could not release Lampton’s condition at the family’s request. A family member reached tonight also declined to talk about Lampton’s injuries.

“I responded there and managed to find him, got the paramedics to him, and we managed to get him situated and get him in an ambulance,” Shepherd said. “It was pretty remote where we were and an ambulance couldn’t get to him. So we had to move him out of the woods and get him to an ambulance.”

Lampton was in the headlines recently after he brought charges against James Ford Seale, a reputed Ku Klux Klansman who was convicted this month in the 1964 kidnapping of two black teenagers who were later killed.

Following yesterday’s stunning revelation by the Washington Post that 26 US attorneys had been considered for dismissals, professionals all around the country are trying to figure out what the Justice Department felt they were doing wrong. Local papers in Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia ask their own attorneys. The consensus? Says stunned USA Dunn Lampton (MS): “I don’t have a clue.”
