(U.S. Supreme) Court limits use of race in school admissions
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected public school assignment plans that take account of students’ race.

The decision in cases affecting schools in Louisville, Ky., and Seattle could imperil similar plans in hundreds of districts nationwide, and it leaves public school systems with a limited arsenal to maintain racial diversity.

The court split, 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts announcing the court’s judgment. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote a dissent that was joined by the court’s other three liberals.

9. How many of you know someone in jail? The teacher turned to see if any of her black or mexican
students would raise their hands. To her surprise only a white girl did, "who do you know in jail?" She answered, my dad, Scooter Libby. There may be such a thing as a culture of poverty; but, there is also the Repug culture of corruption.

5. So much for desegregation. The Repugs and right wing idiots like Alito
have just undone all the work we did to see our minority
students have a chance (opportunity) to get into
"any" university; and, to establish a more tolerant
society by creating an ethnically and racially diverse student
body. This decision will reinforce racial tension: hate the
Blacks, we don't want them in our University; hate the
Mexicans we don't want them in our University. That's ok,
that's why Universities for Women, for Blacks, for Native
Americans and Mexicans were established to afford these
minorities an opportunity for higher education.

18. And the Supreme Court WILL keep coming down 5-4 against us...
...for the next twenty years at least. And nothing in 2008 or future elections can change that. :-(

26. I doubt Kennedy will
live another 20 years. We need to get a Democrat in the White House so when he goes he will be replaced by someone who does not side with the consevative activists so much of the time. Stevens is almost 90 and will probably be the next one to leave and if a Repug replaces him we are going to have 6-3 decisions. Not good.

7. I was on the fence about this issue until I saw the 5-4 vote. Now I'm certain.
I should have been 100% "on the left" with this issue all along.

I was only about 80% certain before, now I am 100%.

13. By itself, I have little problem with the ruling
The motivation I know to be behind this is more disturbing.

Combined with the strategy to allow public school money to go with a child that goes to private school, public schools will be full of only those poor enough to have to attend them, and now that the busing laws are gone, there is nothing to stop the entire country from looking like New Orleans schools - FULLY abandoned by those who care, by those who can afford to leave, and the public schools are only full of the poor and the black, and since the powers that be only have their kids in private schools, the inclination to accept higher taxes to pay for better schools is non-existent.

Trust me America, New Orleans is the perfect example of the president's plan in action...to allow the public who can to abandon the rest of the public to underfunded schools, to watch them rot away and for America to fully fall into a two-tiered society...those that can afford decent education and those that cannot....a COMPLETELY un-American idea.

Finally, the Repuke strategy to de-fund loan assistance, Pell grants and other student aid further assures that only those lucky enough to be related to someone with means can be successful.

Why Americans put up with this shit is beyond me.

15. This is an extremely tragic day for the United States
The Supreme Court has been packed with partisan politicians who could easily pass for corporate bankrolled white majority rule advocates. Of course this won't really personally affect any really wealthy people of color or most white people because our society is so unintegrated to begin with. The US as I once knew it has now begun its rapid descent into a caste system based on skin color and wealth. Hey, somebody has to give state governors the justification to trim education costs by hacking away at health care and education services. They have it now. We have become South Africa in 1950. Just take a few years to set the rest of it up. It will take way more than 50 years to fix what the elitist, wealthy, conservatives have done to this country.

17. We're holding our filibuster for something important......
Thanks alot Dem leaders. Yes, I know you were in the minority, but you didn't even try to stop these right wing zealots from getting on the court.

Now, we get to turn the clock back, way back to the neocon view of the 'good ol days'

Being a yankee of a certain age, I remember the fight there was to get the civil rights act passed, to get schools integrated, heck, to get people treated as human beings.

Now, it seems that I can relive my youth, fighting for what I thought was already won, EQUALITY IN THE UNITED STATES!

IT IS GOING QUICKLY DOWN THE DRAIN WHEN WILL MORE PEOPLE RAISE THEIR VOICE IN OPPOSITION?

I GUESS IT IS TRUE, WE WILL GO OUT WITH A WHIMPER WHILE THE NEOFASCISTS TAKE OVER THE COUNTRY.

Thanks again Dem leaders, thanks indeed...

27. Nothing can be done about it
The only thing that can overrule a Supreme Court ruling is a future ruling that overturns the present one.

best left for you Nigel. You've demonstrated your racism quite well from Jack's to PHB to the racist board you now frequent. Hell, I banned you myself from PHB for your racist tirade against the HONORABLE Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
