True Grits Tour Kicks Off
http://www.clark04.com/story/56/Monday, December 29, General Wes Clark will kick off his "True Grits Tour." To demonstrate his strength in the South, Clark will travel to states across eight southern states in two days discussing his values of patriotism, faith and family.
"This election is going to be won by someone who understands southern values," Clark said, "someone who's a leader, not a politician, someone who believes that we should always put America's interests over the special interests, and who's always held accountable for his actions. We need a higher standard of leadership. That's what's going to turn our country around."
On the tour, Clark will discuss his "Turn Around Plan for America" -- a plan to help real families who face real problems. The plan will increase family income, lift children out of poverty, increase the number of Americans covered by health insurance, send more kids to college, and reduce the number of premature deaths caused by environmental pollution.
"As an Army man, I spent three decades living on bases all over the world," said Clark. "So no matter where I lived, I was always a son of the South."
The importance of the region in elections is undeniable. No non-Southern Democrat has won the Presidency since 1960. This year five southern Democratic senators are retiring, and Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) is up for re-election. A Southerner at the top of the Presidential ticket helps Democrats across the region during their campaigns to take back the Senate.
While Clark's Southern roots are strong, his appeal is also nation-wide, as evidenced by the latest polls in Arizona, Oklahoma and South Carolina. Clark is either winning or in a dead heat for first.
Clark will depart Little Rock Monday morning after a grits breakfast send-off. He will then travel to Jackson, Mississippi, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Birmingham, Pensacola, and end the day in Memphis.
Tuesday, December 30th, Clark will hit three states, traveling from Memphis, to Nashville and Savannah, and ending the day in Charleston.
Grits will be served throughout the trip.
