U.S. Supreme Court Allows Vt. Student's Anti-Bush T-Shirt
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected a Williamstown school district's appeal of a ruling that it violated a student's rights by censoring his anti-Bush T-shirt.

Seventh-grader Zachary Guiles was suspended from the middle school for wearing a shirt that bore images of cocaine and a martini glass, but also had messages calling President George W. Bush a lying drunken driver who abused cocaine and marijuana.

After his suspension, Guiles returned to school with duct tape covering the offending images.

--
The Supreme Court said schools could regulate student expression if it advocated illegal drug use but cautioned that schools could not censor political speech.

1. A t-shirt with
a picture of Bush stoned and drunk would not motivate me to take drugs. But neither would a Bong hits 4 Jesus banner.

5. Pictures of that shirt should be all over the media!
The Bong Hits for Jesus banner was everywhere and so should this be---as an example of allowable free speech.

But you know the MSM will not cover it.

7. But I still don't get how
"Bong Hits 4 Jesus" advocates drug use.

It is obvious satire, on the level of "Nuke the Gay Whales".

But of course, the SC is mostly Republican, and therefore satire impaired.

8. No they're not.
It's just that their idea of satire isn't like ours. We look to things like this and "The Daily Show", their idea of satire is Ann Coulter saying she wished that terrorists had hit the NY Times building or that John Edwards had been killed in a terrorist attack.

10. And don't forget O'Lielly wanting to see SF hit by terrorists.
"Free" speech is only for conservatives, not those nasty lib-ruls.

11. Conservatives get different rules
We say something they don't like and get taken up to the SC all the way through the judicial process, they call for murder and can get out of it by saying, "It was just a joke."

14. Actual description of the T-shirt from court:
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 01:27 PM by thereismore
The shirt’s largest text (found on both the front and the
back) refers to President Bush as the “Chicken-Hawk-in-Chief” who
is engaged in a “World Domination Tour.”4 In smaller text, the
shirt accuses the President of being a “crook,” “AWOL draft
dodger,” “lying drunk driver” and an abuser of marijuana and
cocaine. The shirt is covered with a variety of images including
oil wells, dollar signs and chickens. Included among these
images are some small drawings depicting drugs and alcohol.
The front and the back of the shirt include a large image of
President Bush wearing a helmet with “AWOL” written on it. The
President’s small and very crudely drawn body appears to be the
body of a chicken. In one ‘wing’ the President is holding a
martini glass. In the other ‘wing’ the President is holding a
straw. Next to the straw are three lines of cocaine and a razor
blade.
Other small images of drugs and alcohol are found on the Tshirt’s
sleeves. The left sleeve includes an image of a chicken
with a champagne bottle on one side and three lines of cocaine on
the other. The right sleeve has a coat of arms labeled “Chicken
Hawk Guard” and includes a drawing of a soldier drinking from a
bottle.

19. Total bullshit
"Supreme Court said schools could regulate student expression if it advocated illegal drug use"

Advocating against the phony "war on drugs" IS POLITICAL SPEECH...

Such convoluted logic is to be expected from fascist fucks...

20. My daughter has a shirt
that has a picture of chimp wearing a crown and the saying underneath is "King George...off with his head" The first time she put it on and I took her to school I fully expected a call when I got home for me to bring her a new shirt. Nothing happened and she has worn it several times over since that first time. Pretty surprising since we live in the reddest repuke county in TX.
