Iraq: EFP kills 1 US soldier, wounds 3 in southern Baghdad

BAGHDAD: One U.S. soldier was killed and three wounded
when an explosively-formed penetrator hit their combat
patrol in southern Baghdad, the military said Saturday.

The soldiers' unit had just detained nine men suspected of
making roadside bombs, when they were hit by an EFP on
Friday, the U.S. military said in a statement.

The victims' names were withheld pending family notification.

The incident brought to 100 the number of U.S. troops to die
in Iraq this month, according to an Associated Press count.
The toll for the past three months — 329 — made it the
deadliest quarter for U.S. troops in Iraq since the war began
in March 2003.
