Letter bombs sent to EU figures

Two suspected letter bombs have been sent to the European police body Europol and European Central Bank head Jean-Claude Trichet, officials say.
Bomb experts on Monday defused a bomb in a package sent to the Europol headquarters at The Hague.

Hours earlier police in Frankfurt, Germany found a possible parcel bomb that had been sent to Mr Trichet.

On Sunday European Commission head Romano Prodi escaped unharmed when a parcel bomb exploded at his home

2. Mr. Prodi has been the target of other attacks.

On Dec. 21, two small bombs hidden in trash bins exploded near Prodi's Bologna home. Those devices went off when the house was empty, and nobody was injured. Those bombs consisted of a cooking pot, a gas cylinder and a timer, and were placed in trash bins a few metres from Prodi's house.

Later, a group calling itself the Informal Anarchic Federation, under the acronym FAI in Italian, claimed responsibility in a letter sent from Bologna to La Repubblica newspaper. Investigators said they believed the letter was probably sent by the culprits.
