Gonzales Was Told of FBI Violations
Source: Washington Post

After Bureau Sent Reports, Attorney General Said He Knew of No Wrongdoing
As he sought to renew the USA Patriot Act two years ago, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales assured lawmakers that the FBI had not abused its potent new terrorism-fighting powers. "There has not been one verified case of civil liberties abuse," Gonzales told senators on April 27, 2005.

Six days earlier, the FBI sent Gonzales a copy of a report that said its agents had obtained personal information that they were not entitled to have. It was one of at least half a dozen reports of legal or procedural violations that Gonzales received in the three months before he made his statement to the Senate intelligence committee, according to internal FBI documents released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The acts recounted in the FBI reports included unauthorized surveillance, an illegal property search and a case in which an Internet firm improperly turned over a compact disc with data that the FBI was not entitled to collect, the documents show. Gonzales was copied on each report that said administrative rules or laws protecting civil liberties and privacy had been violated.

The reports also alerted Gonzales in 2005 to problems with the FBI's use of an anti-terrorism tool known as national security letters (NSLs), well before the Justice Department's inspector general brought widespread abuse of the letters in 2004 and 2005 to light in a stinging report this past March.

He's been nailed on things all along.

Doesn't make any difference when the dictator decides the law can be ignored.

29. Under oath or not, lying to Congress should still be considered a SERIOUS offense.
Of course, that would only apply to countries that have a concept of "rule of law". :-(

36. Martha Stewart was never under oath and she did time.
I know she talked to the FBI, which is different than talking to congressional investigators, but I think the same laws do apply.

23. Documentation of the civil liberties violations
Documentation of the civil liberties violations that were reported to Gonzales et al:

' Civil Liberties Violations
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has said he was surprised and unaware of civil liberties violations committed by the FBI during its exercise of Patriot Act powers — including the use of so-called National Security Letters — until an internal Justice Department report uncovered them in March 2007. But Gonzales and his predecessor, John Ashcroft, were routinely sent notifications from the FBI when such violations occurred and had to be reported to the president's Intelligence Oversight Board (IOB), according to documents released this month under the Freedom of Information Act. Here is a timeline:

19. Why do I really believe that's probable?
For whatever reason, Gonzo willingly submits to authoritarianism and worships Cheney and Bush.
With Gonzo, no lie is impossible to tell in the service of his masters.

42. You believe it's probable because that is this administrations
standard operating procedure. They always leave themselves wiggle room. I'd be willing to bet money; if confronted about it, little Bertie and his handlers will use this as a valid argument.

9. The slimy p.o.s. is crafty in his wording
"There has not been one verified case of civil liberties abuse," (my emphasis)

In Gonzales' world "verified" means prosecuted and convicted in a court of law not just found out and disciplined by management.

.... Oh, and he had no recall of this memo at the time he testified, it was just a copied e-mail so he did not review it at once, his car wouldn't start, the dog ate the hard copy, the Mob was after him, he was arrested by immigration, there was a power failure ....

I have nothing but pure contempt for this womanish, sniveling lickspittle. The very idea of such a worthless little zero being the nation's top law enforcement officer would be hysterically funny if it were not horribly pathetic.

But tell me again, why is it that we can't impeach any of these crooks?

25. .....and junior stands in back of Gonzales and applauds loudly.
I like the story where Gonzales and Andy Card went the hospital in the middle of the night to twist Attorney General John Ashcroft's arm to sign a phony spy law.....after it was revealed publicly junior came forward and said that Alberto was a good and decent man, and was just caught up in Washington politics.

It was said that junior has recently read three George Washington books.

24. TONY SNOW HERE------>
How dare you!!!! Gonzales either stupid or a liar???? As a Republican in good standing, Alberto is capable and trained to multitask--- as such he is very capable of both being stupid AND being a liar. We, in the whitehouse, are in command of much more knowledge that even we know about. There are the things we know, the things we know but don't know, and the things we do that are know-knows. Just yesterday, my boss, "the big W", was with Condi "White-On" Rice, when he got a temporary surge--- we are proud of this man, a real man, a mans-man... you know, in the NOT gay way, where we pat each other on the butt but don't really mean it. America should be proud of Alberto, a spanish guy, a minority, what the big W calls... "The Mexicuter".. because he like to name his friends, and because Alberto is such a "Hispanic" name.

This is Tony "the snowjob" Snow reporting from the WhiteHouse, where the rich get richer...SO THE TERRIORISTS WILL LOSE.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x907626

When Boston Globe reporter Bill Cardoso read Hunter Thompson's "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" he proclaimed "That is pure Gonzo!" Cardoso used the South Boston Irish slang describing the last man standing after a drinking marathon.

"Gonzolies" is the English neologism describing the last man standing after a lying match.

"Gonzo journalism" refers to when an author cannot remove himself from the subject he investigates .....
