Bush: US commander to decide Iraq troop levels (not "political figures in Washington")
Edited on Tue Jul-10-07 02:06 PM by Barrett808
Source: AFP

CLEVELAND, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush, battling a growing congressional rebellion against his unpopular Iraq policy, rejected lawmakers' calls for withdrawing US forces from the war-torn country.

"Troop levels will be decided by our commanders on the ground, not by political figures in Washington," the president said ahead of remarks here in defense of his beleaguered strategy.

"I fully understand that this is a difficult war, and it's hard on the American people. But I will once again explain the consequences of failure to the American people, and I'll explain the consequences of success," he said.

His comments came as the White House braced for an interim progress report on Bush's escalation of US troop levels in Iraq, with aides calling it merely a "snapshot" amid early signs that it will offer few hopeful signs of success.

6. OH. So the 'surge' was a general's idea? Not Bush's?
"Oh hey, its not MY war, its those guys in those uniforms with all those funny ribbons on their chests that keep making me do this!! Make them go away!!!"

Gives a whole new meaning to 'commander bunny pants in chief'

10. Wasn't it political figures who decided we only needed 150,000 troops in the first place?
Wasn't it the commanders who were recommended twice that number at least?

What hypocrisy.

11. "the consequences of success"
that's a keeper. one to contemplate. yes, mr. president, what are the "consequences of success"? unfettered access to the oil, without all those troublesome iraqis living on top of it? so the consequences are 1000s upon 1000s of dead, and the stains on all our hands.

*'s fatal flaw is an inability to see beyond binary oppositions. on/off, yes/no, right/wrong, success/failure, good/evil. i blame his god - the one he thinks is answering him - his ego.

23. Like the chimperror would know "success" if it'd hit him in the face.
He never had any "success" in his entire life appart from those of his "robberies" and "just-in-time cover-ups" using other peoples' monies...

12. Bullshit!
The War Against Terror (TWAT), and it's stillborn stepchild in Iraq have been 100% political from the very beginning, and they will never be anything else.

Four years has given the WH time to carefully "weed out," intimidate and silence "commanders on the ground" who might dare speak the truth.

16. Oh War Czar.....Where You At?
And where the heck has the War Czar been keeping himself lately? Wonder if he is considered DC or one of those generals? This crew just keeps playing their shell game, never accepting any responsibility or admitting mistakes. It really is quite amazing how the American people have not risen up by now and stormed the White House.
