New visa requirements making it tough to staff shrimp boats
Source: The Monitor

BROWNSVILLE — Shrimp boats docked in the bay or at the port might be forced to hang up their nets before they are cast today, the kick-off of the 2007 season.

In a typical year, shrimp crews busily prep for the first trip of the season, usually considered the make-or-break voyage.

But this is not a typical year.

The industry, which heavily relies on temporary workers, heads into this crucial period shorthanded due to a paperwork snag that has left hundreds of workers without visas.

1. Hmm Tampa at one time was a major shrimp port but the ships left
Sounds like the Shrimp boat owners like cheap labor from Mexico and this year they did not get them.

After sitting with no boats going out MAYBE the owners will offer a better wage.

3. When you buy shrimp at the store or in a restaurant, are you buying
wild caught shrimp from the US or farm raised shrimp from China? Was the shrimp processed here or in China? Before you condemn the people who run the boats for low wages, consider who their competition is.

4. Excellent.
I feel much better for the shrimp and the other fish who have to live on them.
