16 Jul 2007 09:39:17 GMT

By Alister Bull)

BAGHDAD, July 16 (Reuters) - At least 80 people were
killed on Monday in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk in a
coordinated attack by a suicide truck bomber in a crowded
market and a separate car bomb parked on a busy street,
police said.

Iraqi police said 136 people were wounded in the Kirkuk
blasts and warned that the death toll could rise further.

A Reuters cameraman on the scene described carnage after
the truck bomb in the market, near an office of the Patriotic
Union of Kurdistan, the party of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

The explosion scattered bodies across the market, set dozens
of cars on fire and trapped passengers on a bus where they
burned to death, the cameraman said.

South of Baghdad, thousands of U.S. troops swooped on a suspected al Qaeda in Iraq safe haven used to reinforce militants fighting in the capital, the military said.

Iraqi police said 136 people were wounded in the Kirkuk blasts Monday and warned that the death toll could rise further.

A Reuters cameraman on the scene described carnage after the truck bomb in the market, near an office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the party of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

6. Kirkuk is a mixed city of at least 755,000.
It was traditionally dominated by the Kurds, but Saddam made a conscious effort at "Arabization" in Kirkuk because it is on the edge of a major oil field. The Kurds have been returning and so the Sunni insurgents are attempting to intimidate the Kurds and terrorize the population of Kirkuk.

Future of Kirkuk

The policies of Kurdification by KDP and PUK after 2003 (with non-Kurds being pressured to move) have prompted serious inter-ethnic problems.<26> Arabs and Turkmens feel that the Kurds only want Kirkuk for its oil and do not really have a special interest in the city itself. These groups are largely united against Kurdish claims over the city.

On January 26, 2004, the Los Angeles Times quoted Barham Salih, Prime Minister for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, one of two main political parties controlling the Kurdish Autonomous Region in northern Iraq. Kirkuk is a benchmark by which most Kurds would define their legitimacy in Iraq, he said. "We have a claim to Kirkuk rooted in history, geography and demographics. This is a recipe for civil war if you don't do it right".<27>

According to the Kurds, the conquerors of Kurdistan have tried to destroy the numerous Kurdish emirates one after the other. Apart from their historical claim for Kirkuk, the Kurds invoke Article 58 of the Administration for the state of Iraq for the transitional period, also known as Administrative Law of March 8, 2004 which is considered the interim constitution of Iraq by the now-dissolved Iraqi Governing Council. Article 58 states in part: The Iraqi Transitional Government shall act expeditious measures to remedy the injustice caused by the previous regime's practice in the demographic character of certain regions, including Kirkuk, by deporting and expelling them from their place of residence and forcing migration in and out of the region.<28>

A referendum on whether Kirkuk province should become part of Iraqi Kurdistan will be held on 2007-11-15.

8. Thanks but I know all of this. And this is just the way the situation
has been since Shock and Awe.

My question is more why all the violence now? Is it the new oil treaty (or whatever you call the massive theft of their only asset). Is it the fact that the 'insurgents' are trying to send a message that they won't let the Kurds break away from Iraq? Is it sectarian fighting? Is it the US trying to stir up more shit and trying to drive the Kurds into ceding their oil fields?

There's some reason for all the action NOW.

Ignore the Christian stuff on the right and just read the NY Times piece on the left. It describes the situation in good detail.

15. It happened in Mosul, also. Biblical Ninevah, one of the oldest cities on earth. . .
Was Assyrian Christian then Arab Sunni Muslim overlords, then Kurdish, then Saddam took over and "arabized" the town. Still a lot of Christian/Assyrians there and also Kurds moving back into the city as they had been sent out of the town proper by Saddam.

5. "The explosion scattered bodies across the market,"---oh, how they must

hate our presence there!!

The explosion scattered bodies across the market, set dozens of cars on fire and trapped passengers on a bus where they burned to death, the cameraman said.

The car bomb exploded in a commercial area called Iskan, near shops and a bus garage, police said. The two blasts came within minutes of each other, police said.

10. Well, to be fair...
If we weren't there, Iraqis and Turks would still be killing Kurds. One of the many long traditions of the neighborhood.

Which is why anyone with a brain would have stayed OUT OF IT.

11. All of the US forces have been tossed at a last-ditch effort to secure Baghdad
The rest of the country will be in total anarchy or civil war within a couple weeks. Since Smirky has changed his definition of success again to mean that as long as Baghdad isn't on fire, he's succeeding, this will be ignored

12. Has Bill O'Reilly weighed in with his "who cares"
comments? Remember, this is the guy who said "Who cares if another bomb goes off in Tikrit?" He was angry that Faux News was outed for it's non-stop Paris Hilton coverage while barely covering Iraq -- in fact, covering Iraq markedly LESS than CNN and MSNBC.
O'Reilly's response: "Who cares if another bomb goes off in Tikrit?"
Well, apparently not Bill O'Reilly.
But for those of us who have had a son/daughter in Tikrit, we care.
