Al Gore's fish dinner turns out green
Source: Telegraph U.K.

The reaction was swift: writing in in the Australian Daily Telegraph, Rebecca Keeble of Humane Society International, a conservation pressure group, complained of the danger to the species from "from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing activities".

She noted that "more than 50 per cent of toothfish traded is illegally caught, and includes juveniles vital to the ongoing toothfish population". She called on the US government to help crack down on illegal fishing by sanctioning Spain for allowing its nationals to fish illegally for the species in conservation areas.

And in the meantime, she acidly suggested, "Al Gore could choose something else to eat". Her attack on the former vice-president, and his implied hypocrisy, were rapidly picked up by bloggers around the world.

But the fish enjoyed by the Gores were not endangered or illegally caught.

Poor Rebecca. You're not as bright as you thought, are you, hon?

8. Nice to put that to rest.
I am only a couple chapters into The Assault on Reason, and am so psyched by what I am reading! Truly, the information in it and the way it is written makes it such a dynamite reminder for our times that I wouldn't care who wrote it (though it's not surprising it's Gore.) I think everyone should read it...seriously, a smart and sorely needed poke at The People to wake up and participate again by keeping their eyes and minds open, and about speaking up. This is certainly a book which I'll buy further copies of for friends. Can't wait to get into the rest of the chapters!

I'm glad that this fish story is winding down. I hope that scrutiny of Mr. Gore's diet won't continue to dog him as a non-campaign non-issue.

Al rocks! :headbang:

11. Better Idea
Buy it for enemies.

Friends, heck, you're just preaching to the choir. We need to get this book into the hands of people who NEED their eyes opened, and their heads pulled outta their asses.

15. While you are right about getting "enemies" to read it,
I'm also thinking about a number of friends (younger people 20-somethings) who are really apolitical---and therefore don't participate by reading, writing, or voting.

They're the custodians of tomorrow's America, ya know?

25. I appreciate with what you are saying...
and totally agree that friends should get this book. I know many apolitical people of all ages who should read it.

many of us younger people 20-somethings (and many, many teenagers) are very clued in.:hi:

26. clued-in, absolutely!
And so why DU is such a great refuge of sanity! No, I know many are, but in my field &coworkers it's a lot of attention spent elsewhere, sad to say. I keep trying to nudge 'em to think about crucial national issues, especially when I have 'em all for a long drive somewhere. I think Gore's book would be perfect for them.

Thanks for noticing my post, and hope I wasn't getting too off-topic.

42. Haha, I shall.
Even think I made a convert today on my commute: someone next to me on the subway asked me about the book, and we talked for almost an hour. She's more "to the right" but I convinced her it is a book for our times, and that the governmental wisdom in it is civic-minded, historically proven, and useful for all of us.

Fingers are crossed.

And tomorrow, somebody else....

9. So where is her apology? Wouldn't it be better if Ms Keeble was a little less self-righteous
and a little more informed about the politics in the US? Liberals are always guilty until proven guilty.

13. Of Course
Don't you know we liberals are on the "wrong" side of sensitive political issues? Don't you know it is easier to simply attempt a red herring to discredit your opponents, because they can't possibly win on logical, reasoned debate...because the facts are all on our side??

Yes, I got hold of a copy of the conservatives playbook. Not that it isn't easy to figure out, anyway.

17. Gore is trying to demonstrate to people that sustainable choices are possible ...
As with the company he is buying his electricity from -- he's going out of his way to show that it's reasonable to pay a bit more, for less-harmful options. No doubt he is used to the media going off half-cocked and dumping gleefully on him for any perceived infraction, but having them barge in on his daughter's wedding is rather unpleasant -- especially when the instigator is supposedly on the same side.

41. True....
and any evidence to the contrary was summarily dismissed by the OP's involved. They had two threads going on the subject, and refused to back down. Coincidentally, they both had a very low post count, so I'm convinced there was an agenda, no matter how much they protested to the contrary.
