Georgia Processor Expands Meat Recall

Sunday, July 22, 2007; 12:31 AM

WASHINGTON -- A Georgia meat processor on Saturday expanded
its recall of canned meat products that may be connected to a
botulism outbreak.

Castleberry's Food Co. of Augusta recalled more than 80 types of
canned chili, beef stew, corned beef hash and other meat products
in addition to the 10 brands it had recalled Thursday.

Cans of chili sauce made at the Castleberry's plant were found in
the homes of an Indiana couple and two children in Texas who
had been hospitalized with botulism. All four are expected to
survive.

On Saturday, FSIS said the malfunctions at the Augusta processing
plant may have existed longer than initially estimated.

1. Here are the Brands of recalled products!
Brand names of the recalled products include Austex, Best Yet, Big Y, Black Rock, Bloom, Bryan, Bunker Hill, Castleberry's, Cattle Drive, Firefighters, Food Club, Food Lion, Goldstar, Great Value, Kroger, Lowes, Meijer, Morton House, Paramount, Piggly Wiggly, Prudence, Southern Home, Steak N Shake, Thrifty Maid, Triple Bar and Value Time. The recall also includes four varieties of Natural Balance dog food.

Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Castleberry's at 1-888-203-8446.

Pay close attention! There are a number of Store Brands in that list!

I guess I also have to ask about the one name "Stake N Shake". Is that something that is purchased in a store or is that the fast food chain?

5. from natural balance website:
"NOTICE: July 21st, 2007: Castleberry Foods Volunteer Recall on HUMAN FOOD includes Natural Balance Eatables for Dogs."

"NO EATABLES IS ACTUALLY AFFECTED."

"Natural Balance was informed at 2:45 pm Pacific time by our USDA manufacturer, Castleberry Foods, in Augusta, GA, that they are doing a voluntary recall on all 15 oz. edible foods for humans as well as our Natural Balance Eatables for Dogs (Irish Stew, Hobo Chili, Chinese Take-Out and Southern Style Dumplin's with Gravy). "

um...i don't get it. if the "eatables" isn't "actually" affected, then why is it recalled?

13. There's just one Steak N Shake item, canned chili with beans
per the complete list: http://www.castleberrys.com/news_productrecall.asp Presumably sold in stores; a lot of chains have their brand names on products in grocery stores.

8. Holy hell I'm glad I stopped eating canned meat
products like that. I used to eat canned corn beef all the time -- and I bought some of those labels too. :scared:

9. IMHO
If you eat meat entitled "Piggly Wiggly" you're asking for whatever you get. I know it's a chain, but still....

11. Have we ever had so many recalls in your life before? I don't remember
any time in my 61 years that so many products have caused illness. My feeling is that business is getting away with murder, literally.

19. you would know by now if you had botulism -- you are in the clear
it paralyzes and kills in short order, so you would not be posting on the internets if you had been infected a week ago

these near misses do give us a shiver tho!

21. Time for illness to show: 6 hours to 2 weeks.
Symptoms of botulism poisoning in humans can begin from 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness that moves progressively down the body, affecting the shoulders first then descending to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs, calves, etc. Botulism poisoning can also cause paralysis of the breathing muscles which can result in death unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided. Individuals who show these symptoms and who may have recently eaten one of the Castleberry’s products currently under recall should seek immediate medical attention.

14. I chose Bush yesterday and it was the right choice, for once
I was trying to decide whether to get the "Bush" brand chili in the little glass jar or the Castleberry chili cuz I hadn't bought canned chili in years. I chose Bush because I figured the brand was more trustworthy (they have a dog in their commercials) and I was pretty sure they weren't connected to the crime family of the same name.

15. Well, there goes my just-restocked supply of emergency food...
I buy those great big cans of beef stew for emergency rations because they're chock full o' calories and inexpensive. Yes, inexpensive until you have to throw twenty dollars worth of tinned beef stew away. I wonder if I can get a refund from the factory...

16. Yes, most often you can get your money back
You return it to the store you bought it from and they usually return your money if the product matches the recalled lots. I'd call and ask my local grocers before I threw anything away.

18. with recalls you can get a refund in full from the store even if you no longer have the receipt
i have done this myself, and it's really easy

bring the recalled items to the store and explain that they are on the recall list, you never planned to return them so you no longer have the receipt (i assume you no longer have the receipt if you bought these for an emergency plan because you could have bought them a long time previous) -- if the clerk does not know how to accept the return, ask her to talk to a manager or supervisor

the supervisor will have a list of recalled items and she will approve the full refund of the what the store sold those items for

no problem at all and everyone is very nice and patient in my experience, they all know that a recall is no fun for anyone

once you have your cash back, you can re-stock with brands not on the recall list or if you are right now uncomfortable w. buying any tinned meat then re-stock with tuna, sardines, or other tinned fish

When your wife finishes reading it, ask her how much progress she thinks we've made.

23. Natural Balance is high grade beef stew for dogs
Cattle Drive Beef Stew sounds like low grade for people.

Sounds like convergence to me.

Ewwwww.
