Edwards to take part in RAGBRAI
Source: Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa | Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said Sunday that he plans to get in on the RAGBRAI action in Iowa, cycling this week with seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.

Edwards will join Armstrong and thousands of other cyclists in Hampton on Wednesday - the fourth day of the weeklong, 472-mile Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

"RAGBRAI is a great Iowa tradition that is renowned across the country and across the world," Edwards said in a statement.

The former North Carolina senator said that he and his wife, Elizabeth, who suffers from breast cancer, have admired Armstrong for his work against the disease. Armstrong survived testicular cancer that spread to his lungs and brain.

1. This is a big deal in Iowa
And people from all over the country and some foreign countries come to ride. An estimated 20,000 will overnight in my home town of Humboldt on Tuesday night.

2. Yup
Every television station in Iowa has reporters covering/riding RAGBRAI each year, with daily live and recorded stories ... plus several newspapers.

After about thirty years of this rolling town of wheels every July, there are few communities that have not been part of RAGBRAI. The overnight stays have huge celebrations, but it seems like every town on the route has some sort of celebration as well, welcoming/feeding/entertaining the 15-20,0000 riders (registered and non-registered) and the thousands who tag along as support, hauling gear.

RAGBRAI is damn fun. Sometimes tough to find a shower, but damn fun.

4. Good move. This is exactly why he continues to carry Iowa.
Hillary didn't get her polling info back soon enough to decide that it was an astute political move to join the bike race.

6. Oh, it's a race.
Just wait: Faux News may still have some report about Edwards' wearing raggedy women's clothing. ;-)
