Diplomats Received Political Briefings-Democrats Were Targeted for Defeat
Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 12:03 AM by RamboLiberal
Source: Washington Post

White House aides have conducted at least half a dozen political briefings for the Bush administration's top diplomats, including a PowerPoint presentation for ambassadors with senior adviser Karl Rove that named Democratic incumbents targeted for defeat in 2008 and a "general political briefing" at the Peace Corps headquarters after the 2002 midterm elections.

The briefings, mostly run by Rove's deputies at the White House political affairs office, began in early 2001 and included detailed analyses for senior officials of the political landscape surrounding critical congressional and gubernatorial races, according to documents obtained by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The documents show for the first time how the White House sought to ensure that even its appointees involved in foreign policy were kept attuned to the administration's election goals. Such briefings occurred semi-regularly over the past six years for staffers dealing with domestic policy, White House officials have previously acknowledged.

In one instance, State Department aides attended a White House meeting at which political officials examined the 55 most critical House races for 2002 and the media markets most critical to battleground states for President Bush's reelection fight in 2004, according to documents the department provided to the Senate committee.

16. going on since 2001. That is - violating the Hatch act and politicizing
federal agencies from the day they walked into office. These folks are so out of bounds - and have now laid bare that they do not believe in govt except as a political operation - in terms of getting and keeping power.

Not that many around here had any question about this.

what will prevent them from continuing?

I guess we can expect another stolen election and continued silence on the part of the real victors.

7. So stuff is coming to light, investigations are underweigh, we're on the verge of a
Constitutional showdown, and you're saying that there'd be a whole lot better happening now if the Republicans still controlled Congress?

I'd love to see the case for that.

23. If the republicans controlled congress do you seriously think that

the US would be in better shape?

I know it's been 6 and a half long years of BushCo and 12 of republican rule, but there was a time when oversight mattered.

There is obviously so much corruption in this administration and the GOP's to ranks that, quite possible, the Democrats can't go any faster at cleaning it up.

Look at it this way: It will take time fr all of the criminal acts of the BushCo admin to come to light. The Dems are doing their job right now, but they are being hampered at every turn by the unwillingness of the BushCo guys to ignore the rule of law.

If the republicans were still in charge just what do you think would be happening right now?

22. In March, Rove’s powerpoint presentations were revealed

During a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing today, Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA) questioned Doan about the contents of Rove’s PowerPoint presentation. Doan repeatedly claimed ignorance of the contents of the slides and the verbal presentation that Jennings made. So Braley reminded her with some examples from this “nonpartisan” briefing ...

15. Repubs Get "Elected"
They are very good at getting there asses elected, or I should say getting into office, since it's not always exactly the same thing, as we've found in Florida, Milwaukie, Ohio, etc.

If the repubs were even half as good at running the country as they are at getting into office, things would be going pretty well. Instead, they just make a big mess of everything. The three stoogies would have done better than Bush, Darth & Rummy.

issues. I really doubt it. I would be very surprised if Bush has had even one meeting with his staff or along with congressional Republicans where they talked about health care, cost of housing, cost of college, poverty, etc.

Every meeting is how to make the Dem side of things look bad and to keep everything the way it is, where the rich keep getting richer and their guys stay in office. They are very good at that, too bad they didn't branch out a bit and actually worry about the people they represent instead of themselves.

29. That's the real deal: Republicans who "manage to win" elections...
... only represent "themselves" plus their "contributors" and nobody else, once they "succeed at" getting in.

There should be a law against that, but even then: they don't care about any law.

accrue more power and money to themselves and their cohorts.

There is absolutely no concern for the general good in the equation.

18. Why does the public not see this - republican = corruption
At every turn we find the republicans are corrupt in everything they do.
It is compulsory, they appear to be addicted to corruption.
Of course they are very good at projecting this corruption on their opponents and with the media on their side they have become very good at that as well.

20. Why are there people that don’t see what’s going on? Here are a few clues to start with…
The Decoration of Independence says, Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

Abraham Lincoln said, “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”

Gorge W. Bush said, “You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on.”

Who was this presented to? Who presented it? Why are they not fired yet?

I dont want to gripe about this, I want investigations started by the Office of Special Counsel and will be willing to file complaints if I had more info.

Everyone individual who attended these meetings in clear violation of the hatch act (even for appointees) need to be investigated and terminated if necessary.

Unless we file against them, nothing will get done. And by the way, my Congressman was on top of the list, Nick Lampson.

the porker, Rove???? Then we can slap an Inherent Contempt on that piece of shit and we'll actually get to see him FROG MARCHED out of the White House by the Sergeant at Arms.

SUBPOENA ROVE!

I actually believe that Rove created the Staff Structure of the White House and DOJ with a 'first line of defense' (a moat, if you will) of WOMEN...so they could protect the boys. Just watch Harriet...she'll cry and get sympathy.

SUBPOENA ROVE....we know he's the evil 'Brain' behind all of this.

White House defends political briefings

By DEB RIECHMANN
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- The White House said Tuesday that there was
nothing improper about Bush administration political advisers
briefing top diplomats about key congressional and gubernatorial
races and President Bush's re-election goals.

"You've got political appointees getting political briefings,"
White House press secretary Tony Snow said Tuesday with a
dose of sarcasm. "I'm shocked. Shocked."

Snow was asked about political briefings requested by six envoys
- all political appointees, who were rewarded with coveted
ambassadorial positions in western Europe for their long-standing
ties to Bush and the Republican Party.

-snip-

Despite the administration's insistence that the briefing was not
illegal, some have questioned its propriety, particularly the
official State Department channel through which it was requested
and the appearance in the presentation of a slide explaining the
political strategy of targeting Democrats.
