Judiciary Committee sends contempt charges against Miers, Bolton to full House
Nick Juliano
Published: Wednesday July 25, 2007

The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday formally recommended criminal contempt charges against former White House counsel Harriet Miers and chief of staff Joshua Bolten for their failure to comply with an investigation into the firing of eight US Attorneys.

The charges were presented in a resolution that, if passed by the House as a whole, would initiate criminal proceedings in US District Court for the District of Columbia, although the justice department has said it will not purse the charges because the White House has invoked executive privilege.

The House Judiciary Committee voted 22-17 along party lines to send the Democratic measure to the full House.

Speaking at a committee meeting, Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., said the contempt charges were being sought "only as a last resort. What I am not open to is accepting a take-it-or leave it offer, which would not allow us access to the information we need ... this is the only proposal we have received from White House counsel," Conyers said.

1. Floor vote to be delayed.
Democrats widely agreed, and the citation was expected to pass the committee on a party-line vote and be sent to the full House. A senior Democratic official who spoke on condition of anonymity said a vote by the full House would most likely happen after Congress' August recess.

18. I'm not so sure. It may be better to sweat the Republicans during recess.
I see on my ticker that Rep. Murtha will introduce new legislation to start bring the troops home. My guess is that Bush is going to be very busy in August trying to rebuild his justifications for continuing the surge in Iraq.

Republicans in Congress will be facing their constituencies during August and will be facing increased pressure to find a new course out of Iraq.

Iran will be back on the front burner in September and we know how much Bush likes to fixate on Iran.

I like the fact that contempt charges will hang over their heads, and although I do agree that the delay will give them more to deal with the issue, Speaker Pelosi can easily deflect any criticism by saying that no final decision has been made as to whether to bring it before the full House.

I particularly like the no final decision meme for it is the same game Bush played in the run up to the war in Iraq.

13. Yes, they deliberately delayed this vote for recess. That's unethical...
They stalled the process. The administration was sweating and now they have lots of time to think and make decisions. The insulation of Capital Hill is beginning to show.

Delaying through the August recess gives Conyers et al. time to scrape together enough commitments to impeach. If the House adds this whole scandal to the articles of impeachment and votes to consider it in September, then these two weasels can't be pardoned.

Then you have two stool pigeons guaranteed to tell Congress the whole story, because the President can't protect them while he himself is being investigated for the same crime. Or they'll go to jail until they decide to talk.

Throw them in jail now, and the President will spring 'em before they touch concrete. But if Congress imprisons them to compel testimony after impeachment is on the table, the rest of this year and all of next year will be a parade of scared shitless Bush-bots incriminating themselves and each other just to stay out of jail for not talking. Once they figure out that the President can't protect their criminal dealings, they'll be scattering like the roaches in my old kitchen when the lights came on.

Edit: Oh, great. I'm the pom-pom squad. Seriously, though. Those of you who are angry are forgetting the lesson of Scooter Libby. The Dems can't drop the boom on these guys right now, but if you throw impeachment into the mix you are guaranteed to get these little bastards and maybe fifty to seventy-five mroe, even if Bush and Cheney get away. It may be the best we can hope for.

"In our view, this is pathetic," he said, continuing that the charges were about "partisanship," "insults," and "accusations" when Congress and the White House "should be working together."
