Impeachment call cancels ski trips
Source: Vail Daily

TELLURIDE — A backlash quickly emerged after the Telluride Town Council adopted a resolution last week calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

“It’s huge, unbelievable,” said Telluride Mayor John Pryor. “Ski groups are canceling for the winter. Hundreds of people are bailing. The (town) Web site is flooded with people saying they’re canceling their vacations here.”

Pryor called it a “silly initiative.” The council, he told The Telluride Watch, is too busy to weigh in on national global politics.

...

There was also support. “Let ‘em go to Vail,” wrote one Texan named Dan Stewart Olney on a newspaper Web site. “I will commit to spend more time and money in Telluride now thanks to the initiative.”

2. That's EXACTLY what we should do!
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 01:01 PM by rocknation
A DU-sponsored trip to Telluride! Hundreds of us coming from all over the country meeting for skiing, plans for '08, and REAL LIFE discussions! If Rhodes and Malloy can go on cruises, and Daily Kos can go to Vegas, why can't DU go to Telluride?

By the way, how many people book ski trips in July? Is this a right-wing call in scheme? Well, it's easy enough to retalliate--we should find out who to call and give them our support if not a promise to consider Telluride in our winter vacation plans. Besides, there's more of us then there are of them!

but ask around to make sure the places you're visiting have deciduous trees, because fall isn't quite so interesting when you're in a pine forest.

7. I don't know about Telluride
Actually, I've never been there. It's more of a destination place than a place to make a quick visit. Since it would take me about six hours of relatively hazardous driving to get there from Colorado Springs, as opposed to 2.5 hours of interstate driving to get to Summit County, most people who visit Telluride fly in from out of state. If you want to learn about visiting that area in the fall, you could check out the visitors' bureau website.

15. Not exactly true
Aspen groves are often one large organism, connected through the root system. A particular stand will therefore turn at the same rate. Some of them cover hundreds of acres. :)

I'm just a short hop from Telluride, the main thing to remember here is that this was a citizen initiative, with a lot of signatures. Council voted to just pass the thing, rather than putting it to a vote, realizing that if the people who signed it voted, it would pass. They save the cost of a special election that way.

No one in town is particularly worried about ski season.

20. Telluride
As you all can see from the picture, its in a gorgeous natural setting. I've been fortunate to have performed at the jazz festival, as well as bars in town, and have always loved Telluride. Also don't know what's "silly" about participating in democracy by putting your town on record as standing for the rule of law when the nation's leaders are constantly thumbing their noses at it. This is in the great tradition of American democracy. If some right wing Texans cancel their visits, it'll just make Telluride that much of a pleasant place to visit. Fuck 'em... A recommendation, if you don't mind a little bit of a white knuckle ride: The highway (550? I think) north from Durango (another cool little town, even if both are just a little touristy; I myself have no problem with that) through Silverton and Ouray and then dropping back down to Telluride on the other side of the mountains is SPECTACULAR... ( haven't been on it in quite a few years, but I hear there are still no guard rails...)

Try driving on Trail Ridge Road through RMNP, the highest-elevation paved road of its length in the world, which gently slopes off to the side of a giant ridge. With no guard rails. :)

30. I drove that road in late June 1994 and it snowed!
About 1 1/2 inches of slushy stuff in the middle of a thunderstorm at about 12,000 feet. It was 80 degrees when we left Estes Park in the late morning(I believe that was the name of the town)by the time we were nearing the crest of Trail Ridge Road the temp had dropped 40 degrees. Then the storm rolled in. The sky turned green and I saw the most spectacular and scary lighting ever during that storm. I remember looking into those deep valleys and noticing there wasn't a guardrail in sight. It was quite a ride for a Jersey kid (at the time)who used to call 1500 foot bumps in the landscape "mountains".

I drove it east to west and kept going until I saw sunshine. I was half way to Utah by then. The east-bound lane on the traverse is reverse banked and seems to just slide off into space. Woo hoo!

I have a sneaking suspicious the mayor is a freeper, and not all that many scheduled trips are actually getting cancelled. Of course, there's no way to verify that.

I like the idea of a DU retreat in Telluride. Is it gorgeous there in fall?

In addition or instead, maybe we could shop online and set up a portal so they'd know every dollar spent there came from people who SUPPORT the council on impeachment

23. Do you think the Reporter from the Vail Daily
would actually try to "verify" this story? Maybe make a phone call, or reference even ONE person that had a reservation and cancelled it based on the impeachment resolution???

For a pretzledent with a 24% approval rating, he sure must have a lot of "passionate" ski-bums that were planning a trip to Teluride this year!!!

Sorry folks, but this is the Republican Noise Machine in action. No verified facts, one guy ranting that the economy of the town will be ruined because the town voted to recommend impeachment of a guy that 75% of Americans "effing" hate. Somehow that qualifies as "news" in the Vail Daily.

Wonder how long it will be until Rush and Insanity pick it up and start touting it as fact.

This a "scaled-down" model of what the Right Wing Noise Machine has done to our entire country.

"You better not say anything bad about Repukes/CON-servatives, or it will ruin your business", is about the same as "if you're not 'withus', you're 'agin' us".

42. I love Telluride
Hi there! Don't get the time to post much here, but felt I needed to chime in on this one.

I go to Telluride at least 3 or 4 times a year, and I have a lot of friends there. I was actually there this Saturday night to see America's poet laureate, Bob Dylan, at Telluride Town Park. I go to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival every year, also.

FYI - the locals in T-ride (and almost every ski town) are super-liberal. Telluride is a "civil rights safe zone," and they passed a resolution after 9-11 that no local law enforcement would follow any provision of the PATRIOT Act. The sheriff is a libertarian. I've never been in a place that had such an obvious non-enforcement policy toward marijuana. If I could afford it, I'd move there now. The skiing, hiking, and all outdoor stuff rocks, too.

There was some buzz in town about impeachment, but most people seemed to shrug threats of canceling trips off. However, I did talk to a guy who worked at a larger conference center in town and they lost a 500 person contract from TX because of it. So, there were downsides, but I really doubt that anyone will lose their job as a result. The issue is that Telluride is probably the closest ski resort for Texans, so SW Colorado gets a big Texan crowd. So, I can understand them not wanting to alienate people when 99% of the town's income comes from tourism.

HOWEVER, everyone I talked to said damn the consequences - it's the right thing to do.

For all you folks considering a visit to Telluride - DO IT!!!!! Not just because they have the courage to impeach, but because it's one of the most staggeringly beautiful places on earth. No picture does it justice. The locals are totally chill and will make you feel right at home if you come with the right attitude. It's the kind of place that you can stay and not need a car. Telluride is the only place on earth with FREE public transportation via GONDOLA!

Just go. You'll thank me later.
