Geo Facility to Hold 1,160 Immigrants

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Geo Group Inc., which operates prisons, said Wednesday it will house up to 1,160 immigrant detainees at its LaSalle Detention Facility in Louisiana.

The deal is expected to be worth $23.5 million annually if the facility in Jean, La., is at full occupancy.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will begin housing 416 detainees at the center during the fourth quarter. Geo will add 744 beds by the end of the second quarter in 2008. The expansion will cost $30 million.

The facility is expected to be able to hold 1,160 detainees by the end of the third quarter of 2008.

I hate. I wish there was some way to stop paying into the system that supports these crimes, but that's what we are counting on Congress to take care of. I think that is ultimately why I will vote for Kucinich: he'd work toward defunding this mess.

The immigrants in the army are green-card holders. The immigrants who will be in the detention facility are most likely undocumented or visa-overstayers.

The army will take the first group, but not the second.
