Musharraf holds talks with Bhutto

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan Jul 28, 2007 (AP)

Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf held secret talks
with opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir
Bhutto, a government minister said Saturday.

Minister for Railways Sheirkh Rashid Ahmed said the president
and Bhutto "held a successful meeting" in the Gulf emirate of
Abu Dhabi on Friday, confirming earlier media reports.

Pakistani newspapers and television networks reported that
Musharraf and Bhutto discussed a possible power sharing deal
in a meeting that lasted about an hour and ended without
agreement.

The Abu Dhabi talks faltered when Bhutto, who leads the
Pakistan People's Party from self-imposed exile in London,
refused to agree to support Musharraf if he did not resign
from the military, Geo television reported, citing unnamed
sources.

It seems like London has an inexhaustible supply of exiles, ready and willing to take over countries.

3. Mushy needs needs political credibility wherever he can find it.
Benazir Bhutto has won free elections in Pakistan before
getting pushed out by the military. She is one of the
more credible opposition figures at the moment.

An election is coming up soon and Mushy needs to do
something fast.

6. Pervez Musharraf must be
incredibly desperate to even consider such a scenario.

Look at this "a possible power sharing deal". In other words, Musharraf and Bhutto would SHARE the leadership of Pakistan. Musharraf is a dictator who took over in a bloodless coup a few years ago, and always seems to get "re-elected" but now the shit has hit the fan and his days are numbered.

And Bhutto should trust this guy?

Yeah right:smoke:

7. I saw this predicted (!) a couple weeks back in an Asia Times piece.
And yes, it is a desperation move. We will see whether Ms Bhutto thinks the price is right or not.

Musharraf urged to quit army post

The former Pakistani PM, Benazir Bhutto, has said Pervez
Musharraf must quit as head of Pakistan's military if he
wants to continue as president.

She spoke after the two were reported to have met in
what was said to be a bid to strike a power-sharing deal.

Pakistani reports said Gen Musharraf and Ms Bhutto had
met in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Gen Musharraf is facing increasing political opposition
and rising violence from Islamist militants.
