Nationwide bridge inspections urged
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal officials alerted states Thursday to immediately inspect all bridges similar to the Minneapolis bridge that collapsed into the Mississippi River.

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters signed off on an advisory that was sent by the Federal Highway Administration urging state transportation departments to conduct inspections of bridges similar to the steel-deck truss bridge that collapsed Wednesday.

There are approximately 700 such spans, according to department spokesman Brian Turmail. He did not have a list of bridge locations.

"We don't know what caused this span to collapse, but the secretary wants to make sure that states are taking every possible precaution," said Turmail.

1. Heard on NPR that the collapsed bridge was inspected
in 2005 and again in 2006. Wonder if "Heck ofa job Browney" was involved?

2. Why is it that people have to die before those in
authority get off their asses and do their jobs? Nothing is ever done pro-actively. It's always in response to some tragedy that could have been prevented in the first place.

7. Preventing tragedy is expensive.
Hijacking tragedy can be used to enrich friends and cronies.

8. WHAT?!? Ask the wealthy to give a fair share
toward maintenance of their infrastructure?

And enlarge the role of government to protect us from neglected bridges that collapse?

How can we "cut taxes" and reduce the role of "Big Government!"

4. What good is inspection IF THEY DON'T FIX IT.
Phew-lenty knew the bridge was defected but he took 2 million for the upgrading of Minneapolis for the Republican Convention and supported more money for a Baseball stadium. He wanted it finished in time for the convention. He let the bridge go.

5. We had few of our "flyovers" replaced recently
Colorado isn't a problem - we had several aged bridges that was replaced a few years ago as part of the TREX program.

Our tiny little bridge over Cherry Creek River (more like a stream that a river) on Holly St is currently being replaced - traffic sucks.
