19. Bridges during construction can be dangerous and unstable.
Until the bridge is completed, there often isn't enough
stough "there" to carry the load.

....I wonder if it was an American design?....maybe not, our bridges are usually completed before they fall down....

6. Holy Shit....
We have gone from attacking an extreme administration, to attacking America whenever we can. I think this is turning people off to progressive boards personally....i.e., blaming troops for the war, blaming "America" for faulting engineering on a bridge....its just too much for me....

8. I read that as an attack on China

They're not capable of designing their own bridges, so they steal our plans and build bootleg ones.

20. LOL, thanks for the warning!
Man (just looked at some of the replies), it's very obvious that after 6 years of Bushco some people are simply raw nerves. I think that perhaps, the (justifiable) anger and frustration has gotten so great for some, that they attribute any and all bad to the USA. And if they somehow can't attribute it to us directly, they tell those of us who are discussing the issue that we have no room to talk because of Bush (as if Bush's presence nullifies our cognitive processes and ability to have a valid opinion about any other part of the world).

There was a thread not too long ago about the right-wing turn in Poland and somebody made a statement to the effect of "the Amerikanistan Reich-wing" is being exported as if we have anything to do with that! I don't know the exact reasons for the shift in Poland, but given the very religious nature of the right-wing in Poland now, I bet it has a lot to do with going to the opposite extreme post-Communist repression.

21. Over your head???
My comment reflected, tongue in check, that with our nations failing infrastructure, declining investment, and plummeting ranking in science/engineering, a failing bridge may bear the Made in the USA label (of course we would have imported the parts from China).

10. A bit more - now at least 22 dead, up to 46 still missing
At least 22 people have been killed and up to 46 others are still missing after a bridge collapsed while under construction in central China.
...
The 320m (1,049ft) bridge was being built to span the Jiantuo River, connecting the hilly Fenghuang County with neighbouring Guizhou Airport.

Xinhua said the 123 workers had been busy "dismantling steel scaffolding erected during the construction process" when the collapse occurred.
...
The cause of the accident is under investigation. The bridge's construction manager and project supervisor have been detained for questioning, Xinhua reported.

11. Dang. At least Americans build bridges that can last forty years...

It's still very tragic, don't get me wrong, but given everything else that's Chinese made that seems to be of poor quality, something's really amiss over there. What's so bad about regulations?
