Mexico releases four Spaniards accused of illegal political activity
The Associated Press
Published: August 14, 2007

MEXICO CITY: Mexico announced late Monday that it has released four Spanish citizens detained for allegedly taking part in political protests in the restive southern state of Oaxaca.

The National Immigration Institute said in a statement that the four — an attorney, a journalist, an anthropologist and a professor from the Barcelona, Spain-based International Civil Commission for the Observation of Human Rights — were released "once their legal entrance into national territory could be confirmed."

The announcement came hours after a Mexican senator asked a judge to let the Spaniards stay with a friend until their case was resolved.

In Mexico, it is illegal for foreigners to take part in politics, including protests.
