Murdoch taking aim at N.Y. Times

By Joseph Menn, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
August 13, 2007

If the Gray Lady didn't have enough problems battling industrywide woes, now she has Rupert Murdoch to worry about. The media billionaire has made no secret of his desire to take aim at the New York Times once his News Corp. acquires Dow Jones & Co. and its flagship Wall Street Journal in a $5-billion deal expected to close this fall.

Murdoch said during an earnings conference call last week that he wanted the financial newspaper to have "more coverage of national, international and nonbusiness news . . . all to better compete with the New York Times and other national newspapers."

In private, Murdoch has been more blunt. "Rupert thinks the Times is vulnerable," a longtime senior executive said. "He's going to go after them."

Like other newspapers across the country, the Times has been tightening its belt and has seen its stock price languish as readers and advertisers migrate to the Web. Nonetheless, it has fared better than other publications, retaining much of its circulation and advertising by remaining the essential newspaper of the East Coast elite.

2. oh good, then we can have more Chinese style coverage a la Murdoch
:sarcasm:
Chinese censorship, that is. Maybe the old man will die before he realizes his dream of total control over media.

3. Right Murdock - you are gods answer to the news media.......
Occasionally we get the straight story from the NYT, not from any Murdock publications. Keep dumping your money in the rat hole, since your revenues appear to be pitiful in the print media.

6. What does the writer mean by Mudrock "taking aim" at the NYT?
Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 12:50 PM by Seabiscuit
The link goes to a login page, not the article.

"Take aim" as in (1) turning the WSJ into a paper more similar to the NYT for competition purposes? or (2) buying out the NYT?

See how militarism in this culture has spread like a cancer to the point that people can't say what they mean without using some vague militaristic phrase ("take aim") to muddy the waters? Why not just say ("Murdoch to alter format of WSJ to compete directly with NYT") or "(Murdoch offering to buy NYT")???

I hate that shit.

11. I've been reading that he wants to take away their advertisers.
For one thing, he wants to hurt them financially at a time when the entire newspaper industry is in trouble, though The Times is reportedly doing better than most.
