Leahy: 'Time is up' for White House to produce surveillance opinions
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House asked for more time to produce documents regarding the legality of the Bush administration's no-warrant surveillance program Monday, but the chairman of the Senate committee that demanded them said "time is up."

The Senate Judiciary Committee has given White House officials more than a month to turn over the documents and has already granted extensions for the subpoena, Sen. Patrick Leahy said.

That delay "goes way beyond what anyone expected," he said.

"Time is up," Leahy, D-Vermont, told reporters. "We've waited long enough."

6. Bush will laugh at Leahy and the Democrats for as long as impeachment is off the table!
Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 03:30 AM by IndianaGreen
Contempt of Congress? What a laugh! Who in the Hell is going to prosecute for contempt of Congress or for ignoring subpoenas? Bush already said that the Justice Department won't do anything!

Pathetic that our Democratic Congress lacks the courage to even impeach someone like AG Gonzales!

4. Impeach the bastards.
Will that be serious enough for the * regime to respond? Probably not. And THAT is reason enough to remove them from office.

11. Well, now that cheney is ON RECORD (via lawyer) as saying NO to subpoenas,
one would hope it soon comes down to Secret Service Detail v Sargent at Arms and posse in the battle to arrest the VP.

http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Cheney_has_warrantless_wiretapping_documents_wont_0821.html

Vice President Dick Cheney's office has in its possession more than 50 documents related to a congressional investigation of the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program, but Cheney's lawyer on Monday refused to hand over the documents in response to a subpoena.

In a letter sent to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the vice president's lawyer, Shannen W. Coffin, identified dozens of presidential authorizations of the program and Justice Department memos on its legal justifications in Cheney's possession. Coffin refused to hand over the documents, citing a president's right to keep deliberations with his advisers private.

"The Office of the Vice President possesses copies of documents ... that we understand to be of the most interest to the Committee and with respect to which a claim of Executive Privilege if made would clearly be valid," Coffin wrote in the letter Leahy released to reporters Monday.

Among the documents are "copies of Top Secret/Codeword Presidential Authorizations" issued between Oct. 4, 2001, and Dec. 8, 2006. President Bush approved the warrantless wiretapping program, which allows the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on foreign calls without prior court approval, in response to the Sept. 11 attacks. He was required to issue reauthorizations every 45 days.

Let's hope Leahy has enough mad in him to drag the scoff-law VP into the US Capital, and since they don't have detention facilities there, chain him to a banister not to far from where cheney told Leahy to go fuck himself. The VP can stay there until he obeys the subpoena and that would be a GOOD thing.

5. ok, now what?
another subpoena? another extension? another deadline?

I'm not going to get my hopes up on holding the bushies accountable - we've been here before only to find the "dry powder" facility is still under contruction

time to show some balls - votes or no votes. any of us failing to comply with a subpoena would have had out butts in a cell by now - NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE is above the law

8. That's my question...Now what?
This congress is reminding me of my sister-in-law when she disciplines her children. She sits her big ass on the sofa and repeatedly screams at them "Goddamit! If you do that one more time, I''m going to beat your ass!" which, of course she never does. The kids pay absolutely NO attention to her because they know she's NEVER getting her ass off that sofa.

9. Time is NOT up.
No action planned until the recess is over, and then I'll believe it when I see it.

And even then, it'll be tied up for years in the courts.

12. Time's up, WH! You're about to get a ... harsh scolding!
Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 10:00 AM by Akoto
I hate to be cynical, but it's tough to do otherwise at this point. I can already see it. Sure, Leahy would've brought up contempt, but the WH was nice enough to put together some documents during recess. Leahy will back down, and they'll get away with yet another defiant act.

Emptier, since Marshall Petain of Vichy France never even pretended to defy his master.

Leahy, being a member of the Amerikan Imperial Senate, must at least pretend...

19. How is this supposed to work again?
Was Fitzpatrick only allowed to conduct an investigation and force certain assholes to testify after first being allowed to be appointed by the Ass-emperor Chimp?

And then if the House were to actually start impeachment the process (by their autonomous authority), how can they force any of these assholes to testify?

24. Time is up
the buzzer buzzed
the bell rang

and

the light changed.

whistles blew,
steam boiled forth,
the clock ran out.

stars died.

ten thousand generations were born,
and then expired
(because birth is the beginning of death)

and in that time

twenty-two billion billion billion billion universes were created
and even so

after all that time

the Democrats did nothing

37. the Senate is NOT in session, so Leahy couldn't do anything even if he wanted to
I believe the White House is now requesting until after Labor Day. The Senate doesn't return until then anyway. In order to issue a contempt citation, I believe the Senate panel would have to vote on it. So Leahy has even less ground to stand on. He should really just shut up until he is willing and ABLE to do something.
