Poison pyjamas add to China export scares
Source: Financial Times

The safety problems affecting Chinese goods spread from toys to textiles on Monday as New Zealand said it would investigate allegations that imported children’s clothes contained dangerous levels of formaldehyde.

The government ordered the probe after scientists hired by a consumer watchdog programme discovered formaldehyde in Chinese clothes at levels of up to 900 times regarded as safe. Manufacturers sometimes apply formaldehyde to clothes to prevent mildew. It can cause skin rashes, irritation to the eyes and throat and allergic reactions.

The Warehouse, a New Zealand retailer, issued a recall at the weekend for children’s pyjamas made in China after two children were burned when their flannelette nightclothes caught fire.

The New Zealand investigation is the first time that the safety of Chinese clothes has been called into question; concerns have been raised over a series of Chinese products in recent months, including toys, food and toothpaste. Last week, Mattel said it was recalling 18.2m toys globally because of hazards such as the use of lead paint.

1. So China is poisening us and the Administration is mute....
how many of our citizens will suffer from these inferior goods.

The companies that are importing goods from China so they could save a buck and not pay American workers should be fined....the fines should hurt so badly that it would be cheaper to make the products here in America...

5. Chemicals in Clothing
I suffer from the chemicals in clothing and bedding. Just about a year ago, they started really adding some potent chemicals to fabrics.

I thought I was the only one. I just keep returning and returning things and mention that my reason for returning is the chemical smell. Of course they don't have a little box for that reason. So they won't ever know and probably don't care one bit. From these new chemicals I get heart palpitations, swollen glands, and a tight throat.

Just who's watching what's being put into the fabrics overseas?

6. I've only bought 100%
cotton for decades and usually at a second hand store and lucky for it cause I'm really sensitive to chemicals, too.

All my cleaning products are natural substances like vinegar and ..I don't know, I get them at the co-op and they clean well and I don't want to pass out. :)

15. This is one reason why...
... I buy vintage clothing... it's cheap, it's recycling, and it's waaay cooler than stuff you get in the store now.

Vintage clothing has the soft comfy-ness and worn feeling I love, without having to worry about where/how the material was made and if the workers are paid a decent wage.

Peace :hippie:

8. They should investigate the dye used in chinese made towels too
and clothes. I'm ticked off at the lousy fabrics and quality of chinese made clothes. They all look wrinkled as heck hanging on racks in the stores. and those clothes are not inexpensive.

9. New from Wal-Mart, Embalmo™ brand pajamas
After your children die from lack of health care, the pajamas preserve their corpses and save you the embalming fee from the undertaker.

Just another example of globalization looking out for the little guy.

16. since they started direct shipping to stores, nothing is safe anymore
things go straight from the four corners of the earth to the sales floor with no one looking except the clerk.
no central warehouses, and quality inspections, if any, are after the fact.
