FDA cancels plan to close labs

Bowing to congressional opposition, the Food and Drug Administration has canceled a planned reorganization that included closing more than half the laboratories it uses to test food.

The reorganization, of the FDA’s Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA), would have consolidated 13 labs into five. About 260 analysts from the shuttered facilities would have been offered relocation or new jobs, though agency officials acknowledged many would likely have chosen instead to leave the agency.

FDA officials have said the reorganization would free up resources at the agency, which inspects less than 1 percent of food entering country due to budget and staffing limits.
