Judge: Bush Official Faces Contempt
Source: AP

GRANTS PASS, Ore. - A federal judge in Montana has ordered the Bush administration's top forestry official to explain why he should not be held in contempt of court for the U.S. Forest Service's failure to analyze the environmental impact of dropping fish-killing fire retardant on wildfires.

If found in contempt, Agriculture Undersecretary Mark Rey, who oversees the U.S. Forest Service, could go to jail until the Forest Service complies with the court order to do the environmental review.

Noting that Rey had blocked implementation of an earlier review, U.S. District Judge Donald W. Malloy in Missoula, Mont., ordered Rey to appear in his court Oct. 15 unless the Forest Service completes the analysis before that time.

Forest Service spokesman Joe Walsh said the agency was working on the analysis, but he could not say whether they would meet the new deadline, because it was two months away. Rey did not immediately respond to a request for an interview.

4. We are seeing this country's natural assets disappear at a rate that is truly alarming.
I'm heartened that it's a District Judge in Montana.

The Forest Service has been doing a magnificent job in maintaining our national parks, until fairly recently.

What has happened recently seems to be a change in the philosophy of the agency from protection to exploitation.

:toast: for recognizing this travesty. MKJ

7. montana, is that in the USA,
joking of course, it seems the positions bush and the republicans have been placed in decided it was a given position and accountability was not required.......

20. Yep, Montana. Same place with the Governor who went to D.C & TV shows wanting our helicopters back
Governor Brian Schweitzer went on a road trip to raise awareness that the Montana National Guard had 5 of its 6 helicopters in Iraq instead of Montana. This being the fourth largest state, area-wise, there is a LOT of ground to cover during fire season. Giving up vital resources HERE to help cheney make money over THERE was not acceptable.

We had very serious fires and the fact that our Guard (and their equipment) were deployed in a pointless war put all of us here at risk. Our Gov raised hell anywhere they would put a microphone in front of him. We got our birds (and crew) back.

Montana is a prime example of why DEMs (and DUers) should NOT casually write-off 'red states'. We certainly should not disparage 'red states' generally as too many around here do. The folks in 'red states' just might be natural allies to DEMs if we just approach the situations well and LISTEN to more rural populations rather than talk AT them.

Our Gov has some important lessons about how to turn a population back to the idea of Win/Win solutions. Like Dr. Dean, there are many here who KNOW common sense is not so common and must be cultivated. If we listen and really communicate, we can find lots of support in states too many want to just ignore.

We have a Federal Prosecutor here abouts (or we hear of him, he is seldom seen) who is a bushco appointee and thinks Montana is just a part time job. Glad there are judges here who know there is work to do. Bravo for contempt of court if bushco flunkies fail to adhere to laws. U.S. District Judge Donald W. Malloy is onto something. Charge executive branch criminals whenever they defy laws! Make damned sure they understand we are a nation of laws, not a domain where arrogant, self-serving appointees can just run rough-shod over the general good.

Contempt is what ALL bushco flunkies have for America. They continually demonstrate Contempt of Court, Contempt of Congress, contempt for the Constitution, the people, the law... contempt for America. Time to give seminars on just what contempt will get them.

6. "Deadlines. Shmeadlines"
Nobody in the * regime gives a rat's ass about any other branch of government. That appears to include public opinion as well.

It's long past time to impeach these bastards and war criminals.

The USA is the new Germany in modern history. It would be best to self-correct before it gets worse and others must do it for us.

9. As Arianna pointed out in her blog today - Rove's footprint:
Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 01:59 AM by SleeplessinSoCal
"These accouterments included, in the words of the Post, "enlisting political appointees at every level of government in a permanent campaign that was an integral part of strategy to establish electoral dominance." But Rove's plan involved much more than having Cabinet officials make election year visits bearing federal goodies to the districts of embattled Republicans; it also meant using the government's regulatory mechanisms to reward major GOP contributors. Major contributors such as Big Coal.

Coal mining interests have donated more than $12 million to federal candidates since the Bush-era began with the 2000 election cycle, with 88% of that money -- $10.6 million -- going to Republicans."

I'm having a hard time thinking of one appointment - Rove likely hand picked - who has done the decent thing in his/her job. Those who had decent thoughts - left their jobs.

17. As we speak ...
... bush is meeting with the leaders of Mexico and Canada, now if anyone here thinks that they are not discussing the soon destruction of the dollar and forcing the North American Union policy of the Amero as the new unifying currency, (if you're not aware of the NAU - get so) and if you also think that anyone from the Democratic (except Kucinich or Gore) or the Republican Party (outside of Ron Paul - who has some serious skeletons) is going to save us, than I have a Timeshare in beautiful Downtown Baghdad I'd like to sell you.

THE REVOLUTION IS NOW! SEPT. 11th GENERAL STRIKE!

We can't wait for the next rigged election and hope for the best.

We can't wait for a corrupt Judicial system to repair itself and hold these criminals accountable.

Look what happened in 06' - we voted the Dems in to END the illegal occupation and hold people accountable. Not only did they NOT stop the occupation, they granted the funding and we now have MORE military in Iraq than ever before!

They don't listen to our letters, phone calls, emails, voices or pleas - THEY DON'T REPRESENT US! They represent the corporations.

HIT THE CORPORATIONS BACK! If you own a business - close shop. If you drive a bus - stay home! Stay home from school. Teachers - stay home. BUY NOTHING! The only power we have left is the money the corporations want from us.

Boycott GE products - Home Depot and other corporations that contribute to the war machine that is America today.

Outside of massive sustained General Strikes I see no other means to stop the madness.

It worked for Gandhi.

I know, I know, we're talking about the American Public, but even enough of them will get on board as Critical Mass moves front and center and if we can start GS now and build them, well, I don't see anything else really than the continued marsh towards a One World Fascist Government

19. No...he doesn't face contempt nor anything else.
Bushies and Nazis do not respect the Rule of Law and most certainly do not respect the pronouncements of judges who are not Nazi or Bushie.

So you watch, whatever the specific machinations and motions are eventually gone through, to think that a Loyal Bushie would be held accoutnable is the naivest of fantasies.

Sure, occasionally it still happens, but not for much longer.
