Researchers find way to drug test a community by using sewer plant wastewater
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Researchers have figured out how to give an entire community a drug test using just a teaspoon of wastewater from a city's sewer plant.

The test wouldn't be used to finger any single person as a drug user. But it would help federal law enforcement and other agencies track the spread of dangerous drugs, like methamphetamines, across the country.

Oregon State University scientists tested 10 unnamed American cities for remnants of drugs, both legal and illegal, from wastewater streams. They were able to show that they could get a good snapshot of what people are taking.

Two federal agencies have taken samples from U.S. waterways to see if drug testing a whole city is doable, but they haven't gotten as far as the Oregon researchers.

Cities in the experiment ranged from 17,000 to 600,000 in population, but Field declined to identify them, saying that could harm her relationship with the sewage plant operators.

1. Why don't they just invent robots &kill the rest of us.
I mean, that's what they want -- robots to tell what to do, how to live & to work to support them. Slave labor without the hassle.

35. Just like Nazi Germany. The tranisiton from Liberty to Tyranny is a rough one.
I always wondered how living under Nazi rule was different from living under Bushie rule, on a day to to basis, as things were tranforming themselves.

Now I know, thanks to Victor Klemperer. Not very different at all, especially to those like Klemperer and most DUers, who saw Hitler/Bush from the very beginning and have watched the tragi-comedy that our nations became in slow-motion.

By the Klemperer Measure, daily life in Hitler's Germany, at least 193-36, was much the same as it is here in Amerika.

what more they will gain by having a large snapshot like that.

19. Meth should be easy to track with the mass ephedrine purchase right?
But I'm guessing they don't want to bother the corporation that makes it. They just want to lock up the users.

8. They Waste Their
time spending our Tax money on this????
When they could be putting it towards Universal Healthcare?

I guess they want to find out if those new Pharmaceutical Drug T.V. commercials are working.
Who's to say they aren't testing for "Legal" Drugs?
That's where their interest is anyway.
They care more about about their Big Pharma buddies's $$$$$$$profits$$$$$$$.

10. Not fingering individuals, but ...
You can imagine the scenario that very well could play out. If a city's wastewater supply showed an "unacceptable" level of "drugs," the federal government could withhold highway funds, law-enforcement funds, even food-stamp money from everyone in the "offending" city.

Don't say it couldn't happen.

36. There is nothing that "Can't happen" in a nation like Amerika, no evil too great
for a people driven insane and disconnected from reality as the Imperial Subjects of Amerika.

NOTHING should be off the table, in terms of what our nation will become in the Final Stage of the transformation.

We will not know what shape the evil takes in it's Final Solution Form exactly, but we can reasaonably guess that it will not be good times for Enemies of the BushPutinst State.

26. Actually, it provides reasonably accurate and objective data
for tracking the spread of meth (and presumably, other dangerous substances) from community to community or region to region. As with many things the methods are pretty cool- it's the applications that raise concerns.

14. Here's how they could pinpoint a single house as the source of drugs
Start at the treatment plant and run a sensor on the end of a long flexible tube backwards up the sewer main. At each branch in the main the sensor sniffs out which branch to follow, just like a catheter in a blood vessel. Keep reeling out more tubing and sniffing backwards until you end up at a single sewer line to a single house and then the catheter's onboard GPS would pinpoint the location of the house where somebody flushed drug-tainted urine.

Piece of cake.

21. I'm pretty sure I know what the argument is too
Like the excuse they gave at my HS when I was going there that they could search anywhere they wanted without permission on school property with drug dogs. They said, "they aren't searching YOU, they are searching the AIR next to you." Talk about hairsplitting, I bet they'll use an excuse like, "once you flush your excrement is considered public domain" or some such bs like that.

If there were an announcement that the sewer water was to be tested in Washington DC,you'd see that program halted and declared a terrorist action.Or better yet, announce a test of the water at that famous white colored house.:smoke:

You will not be able to reliably say that anyone is abusing meth or heroin because of too much cross reactivity. The only valid result will be cocaine---and only if there is no dentist or ENT practicing in the community, because they use cocaine in their offices.

40. Stop making sense
It is more important to use pharmaceuticals in private unfettered fashion than think their use has any consequences on land, wildlife or body (no diffence prescribed or self-administered).

This is one of those issues that privacy ends when it starts affecting my life.
