Mayor Naugle, other speakers attack gay sex
Source: Sun-Sentinel

FORT LAUDERDALE - Mayor Jim Naugle and several religious leaders held a news conference Tuesday to draw attention to what they described as the moral and health risks of gay sex.

Naugle is at the center of a political war between gays and religious conservatives that started earlier this summer when he said public bathrooms in Fort Lauderdale are plagued by gay men cruising for sex and said he uses the term "homosexual'' because "most of them aren't gay. They're unhappy.''

At a news conference in front of City Hall on Tuesday, Naugle and other speakers called on gays to end promiscuous sex in order to stem Broward County's HIV/AIDS crisis. Though the health department has no statistics concerning how many cases of HIV are contracted via sex in public bathrooms or parks, Naugle has tied the two issues together.

I live down here with my partner. Naugle needs to go yesterday. This needs to be national so Naugle is forced out along with Dozier (rampant Islamaphobe to boot) and their cabal of haters.

South Florida needs to be taken back for humanity.

17. Lol... why not?
I'm gay, but I think about straight sex, if only because it's interesting to me that human sexuality comes in so many forms. You're not the least bit curious about sexualities other than your own?

18. Nothing to be curious about.
I know it doesn't work for me. I think these people are overly fascinated by something that doesn't concern them. Or does it?

19. I find human sexuality to be so interesting
Gay or straight. I think that what people are into, like games or s/m or porn, is interesting. It's not necessarily what I'm into, though.

3. Used to live there; thought Ken Jenne ran everything. Where'd Naugle come from?
Sorry, but I moved from there in 1999. Neighbors on three sides (north Lauderdale, west of Federal Highway) were gay (male) couples; good friends with two of the couples, and brought my Michigan background to our annual Christmas lighting contest (beat one couple, had to concede to the other). Anyway, great memories. How could this happen in Fort Lauderdale? Seemed pretty gay friendly back then. Backlash? I am sorry to hear this, and pissed, too.

6. It's like any mold-- you have to keep on top of it or it will spread
http://www.flushnaugle.org/

Think the US in 1999 while Bush arose
US in the 1980s while Moral Majority ran rampant.

It's time to plunge this guy and his cronies out.

Unfortunately, it's the same old game.

Wilton Manors, Victoria Park, etc. were revitalized and the money came pouring in--in large part to Fort Lauderdale becoming the new Greenwich Village. Once the money is there-- the creeps/closet-cases (i.e. Crist)/and bigots come out of the woodwork to try and get rid of us.

It's time for another Stonewall.

4. I am surprised they didn't trot out Anita Bryant.
She thinks she has dibs on this issue in Fort Lauderale.

Frankly, I think the Mayor should just try to stay out of the bathrooms and go back to using the internet for his hookups.

7. isn't it usually the case
that when you get some unhinged nutbag like this railing against the 'evils' of being gay, that in a few weeks, they get picked up soliciting gay sex; or they get nabbed taking indecent liberties with a minor; or they get caught in their diaper wanting a dom to tell them how bad they are...

Bigotry's just so narrow; far wider actions are justified with this species.

13. When gays are demonized in a community we know it is out of ignorance and opportunism.
They way to struggle against such electioneering and posturing rhetoric is with information and the scientific truth because such men as Naugle rely on half truths and outright deceptive information based in religious fantasy and imagination. And, such fabrications will not stand when held in the light!

15. So what "deviant" sexual behavior is this guy engaging in NOW?
And why is he trying so hard to HIDE HIS homosexuality?!

Those who preach and think and condemn what others do are almost always guilty of doing WORSE than what they accuse others of doing...

Isn't there a reporter out there who can ask THE questions?

16. Naugle is a Democrat.
Or, I should say, a "Democrat." He's always supported Republican candidates. He has managed to build up a following among people are not necessarily conservatives by appearing moral and ethical in his actions. Demolishing him politically will not be a simple matter.

20. Maybe if these jerks would let homosexuals get married
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 12:57 PM by heliarc
They won't have to hide their sexuality and "cruise" in public bathrooms...

Maybe if public money was spent correctly, the bathrooms would be cleaner.

Plus, last time I checked there was plenty of heterosexual (and I call them that because they're unhappy), activity in public bathrooms too.
