Iraqi PM lashes out at U.S. critics
Source: Associated Press

DAMASCUS, Syria - Iraq's prime minister lashed out Wednesday at U.S. criticism, saying no one has the right to impose timetables on his elected government and that his country "can find friends elsewhere."

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki blamed the U.S. presidential campaign for the recent tough words about his government, from President Bush and from other U.S. politicians.

Bush on Tuesday said he was frustrated with Iraqi leaders' inability to bridge political divisions. But he added that only the Iraqi people can decide whether to sideline al-Maliki.

"Clearly, the Iraqi government's got to do more," Bush said. "I think there's a certain level of frustration with the leadership in general, inability to work — come together to get, for example, an oil revenue law passed or provincial elections."

1. Such as Iran? With 'every option on the table', I can only wish them good luck.
Maybe the PM ought to concentrate on getting his own people to grow the fuck up and stop killing each other.

4. Sunnis and Shiites have been killing eachother long before America was even created
Point being here is that although our nation fucked up and its actions led to an even more open conflict between the two, we're never going to get these two groups to live harmoniously. That's something your average Republican doesn't understand either. That's why anyone with half a brain opposed Iraq first and foremost-open civil war between two very tribal groups who do not want Democracy they want power and total control.

At this point it IS the job of the PM to deal with this issue now, and if we want to set a timetable for our troops to come home and stop playing referee over this long standing civil war it is completely within our right, just as it is anyone's right to criticize how we shouldn't have even gotten involved in the first place.

5. Sunnis and Shiites did not kill each other by the hundreds of thousands in a matter of 4 years
Your country screwed up Iraq and now you blame Iraqis.
I wouldn't do that.

8. Wrong. I blame my country for allowing it to happen more openly in Iraq

But the conflict was always there. Don't even try to twist my words it makes you look elementary. You call having a dictator using torture and murder to keep the combatants in line control? Because that's how it was before my country did anything to Iraq.

NEITHER actions are justifiable. Hear this and hear this good. I am not justifying what my nation did to Iraq. It was wrong and it led as I stated which you overlooked obviously to open season civil war between the two groups. A similar contrast would be the Iran-Iraq war. If the US didn't exist what that have stopped it? No. But it is a matter of fact that we "assisted" both sides of the fence for our gain.

But that war still would've happened at some level regardless of US involvement. America did not make the Iranians and Iraqis mortal enemies just as we did not make the Sunnis and Shiites enemies-all we did was give them a playground with no teacher to break up the fights. That doesn't make us right, but it doesn't levy the fact that these two groups have always been at war with eachother and will always be at war until they broker their own peace which at this rate is not likely to happen anytime soon.

But the two groups always hated eachother always looked for ways to eliminate eachother since LONG BEFORE Americans ever set foot on Iraqi soil. THAT fact you cannot deny just as I cannot deny that my nation has only furthered this conflict to another dimension.

As I said, it is now the job of Iraqis to fix their nation. Another 100 another 1000 dead American soldiers are not going to quell this conflict which is why I am in favor of the Iraqi PM take control of his inherited nation and not act as though he has the right to dictate when American forces depart Iraq.

THAT is the point. PERIOD.

10. Yup and nobody understands this little fact
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 04:18 PM by noahmijo
The Sunnis and Shiites who are now engaged in open civil war in the nation were essentially held back via the fear that a ruthless dictator like Saddam instilled into them. Try explaining this to the Republicans that this was the purpose of the torture. Am I justifying torture? NO BUT when you rule a nation where the people hate you and hate each other and don't fear death, Democracy isn't exactly going to swoop in and make everybody hold hands.

These people don't want Democracy, they never wanted Democracy they want Shiite-Islam Theocracy or Sunni-Islam Theocracy and THAT is what Iraq is going to become depending on who can spill more of the either side. Take your pick of what's worse having Saddam around or that.

Until these two groups learn to live in harmony I can't think of anything better than a "Nobody throws bricks in this neighborhood but me" style of dictatorship.

It's sad it really is but well that's what we removed and now it's as I said in a previous post total anarchy in the playground with no teachers to break up the fights.

9. I wonder what threat or other payback Maliki will get for this
Somehow I get the feeling that Maliki, if he doesn't keep his big mouth shut, is going to get a Bushie Special "Rogue Militia" attack, which will probbaly kill the poor bastard.

I guess he will or has already been warned by Loyal Bushies before he is whacked.

13. "can find friends elsewhere"..
Now that's a great idea, then maybe the Bush/Cheney cabal will be forced to bring our troops home and the billions of dollars can be used for American taxpayers?

I hate this unwarranted war/occupation and wish it had never happened!
The Iraqi people did not deserve this and I am ashamed and sorry for their continued suffering! ;(
