Charity wants seized documents back
Source: NJ.com (Star-Ledger)

An international Muslim humanitarian organization, which was raided by federal counterterrorism officials nearly a year ago, is asking a judge to order the return of nearly 200 boxes of paperwork it says are critical to its operations.

FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force agents searched the Southfield headquarters of Life for Relief and Development last September. Agents hauled away computers, documents, letters and ledgers, but no one was charged and the agency was allowed to continue operating.

The charity said in a recent court filing that it had been told the U.S. attorney's office would provide the records, but only if Life for Relief paid copying charges of between $21,000 and $115,000.

<snip>

Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said charging Life for Relief for photocopying was akin to making the agency pay the FBI for the cost of its investigation.

1. Outrageous
Imagine the public response if this had been done to a Christian or Jewish charity.

3. It is also rubbing salt in. They do these bad thing and then
want you to pay for it. I had a long fight with the IRS once. They made an error and said they had and billed me for it. What a long time it took for me to get out of it. If I had been a corp. I bet it would never have happened or not under this WH. We do seem to have a little God running things and right into the ground. Take us years to get over this last 8 years.

2. Don't fight it, son. Confess quickly.
If you hold out too long, you could jeopardize your credit rating.

10. What is Information Retrieval charging? (Brazil - Movie, 1985)
A subplot that many viewers of BRAZIL seem to miss entirely is that
of Information Retrieval charging. "Information Retrieval" is a euphemism
for "interrogation" or "torture." The extent of Information Retrieval
Charging is revealed in Deputy Minister Conrad Helpmann's interview, which
is shown on the telescreen while a technician swipes at the beetle which
determines the fate of the movie. The interviewer asks the Deputy Prime
Minister about the economics of the terrorist situation, and the Deputy
Prime Minister replies:

"I understand this concern on behalf of the taxpayers.
People want value for money. That's why we always
insist on the principal of Information Retrieval
charges. It's absolutely right and fair that those
found guilty should pay for their periods of detention
and the Information Retrieval procedures used in their
interrogations."

4. Does that mean I can do FOIA request of all Bush Admin records
and demand the government pay for all photocopying and delivery charges?
